Elizabeth Unckrich Obituary

Elizabeth T. "Betty" Unckrich, 97 of Galion passed away Tuesday evening, November 4, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born June 27, 1917 in Lancaster and was the daughter of William J. Thompson and Florence (Eyman) Thompson Coppins. On October 16, 1939 she married Ferdinand W. "Ferd" Unckrich and he preceded her in death on January 25, 2001.

Betty was a 1935 graduate of Upper Arlington High School and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1939 with a Bachelor's degree in Science in Home Economics. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Betty was a very active volunteer with the Galion Chapter of the American Red Cross, teaching swimming lessons and working the blood mobiles, member of the Galion Community Hospital Auxiliary for over 50 years, where she was chairman of the comfort cart and worked in the gift shop, member of the Galion Boosters Club helping her husband organize Galion's Pickle Run Festivals, member of the Friends of the Galion Public Library, member of First Lutheran Church in Galion where she taught Sunday school to first, second and third graders and was superintendent of the primary level classes. Betty wrote three articles published in the National Lutheran Resource Magazine and organized daily Vacation Bible School. Betty served on the Board of Directors of the former American Steel Grave Vault Company in Galion, which she and her husband owned and operated for many years. She made and collected many teddy bears for enjoyment, some of which she donated to various organizations for fund raising events and also for the Galion Police Departments use in consoling children in need.

Betty is survived by her daughters Mary (Allen) Kingseed of Galion and Betsy (Roger) Beaudet of Galion; grandchildren, Lisa (Brad) Reed, Brent (Stacie) Kingseed, Mark (Diane) Kingseed, Ann (Mark) Miller and Jenny (Rich) Elsasser; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Joshua Reed, Madison and Matthew Kingseed, Samantha and Peyton Miller, Zackary and Evan Kingseed and Trey, Andrew and Jace Elsasser.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a son Captain William F. Unckrich.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 pm Friday, November 7, 2014 at Snyder Funeral Home Richardson Davis Chapel, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at the First Lutheran Church 127 South Columbus St. Galion with Rev. Matt Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Captain William F. Unckrich Educational Fund, First Lutheran Church and the Crawford County Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
