For 12 years , while I was in Lawrence, Bill gave me a friendship, that I think benefited us both. I was in Morocco, when I learned of his death. The news was a sadness. Like most people that knew him, I was rewarded by his friendship, and I know that in whatever dimension his soul is manifest, it is rich and strong through the kindness he displayed to so many people during his life.

Bill and I were Breakfast Optimists together for many years. I always remember the Optimists cookouts at his
farm. Bill was always one of the first to arrive at every Optimist event. I had just joined the club and had
major surgery at the Leavenworth VA Hospital. When I came out of surgery, Bill was awaiting with Darlene
to see that all was well. He was a great friend.

Prayers and fond memories are what we have to remember our Uncle Bill. Too many sweet remembrances to list, but I will never forget how supportive he always was to our children. He attended piano recitals, choir concerts, musicals and plays, and always told them how proud he was. We will be forever proud to call him Uncle Bill.

Uncle Bill was my mother Barbara's brother. He was shy and reserved but was enthusiastic when sharing his love of antique farm equipment. When we visited his house once, when my son James was a kid, Uncle Bill took us to a show of steam machinery in a small town near Lawrence (McLouth, KS). A large field was full of tractors, fired up and driving around. There was even a threshing machine being driven by a stationary engine. James was fascinated, as was I. I'm sorry that I was unable to attend Uncle Bill's memorial service, due to a broken leg.

It is sad to hear of a Pendleton passing. We knew Uncle Bill whenever we were in Lawrence to visit Al and Lorita and see the cousins and farm. My grandparents had such a close relationship and at recent Pendleton weddings, it is nice to see the families still getting together. Our condolences to our Pendleton cousins.

Mr. Pendleton was a delightful person. I always enjoyed visiting with him. His daughter,Hendle brought him to the Salute to Veterans Gala at the Dole Institute of Politics, on the University of Kansas campus in November, 2014. He was happy to be on the dance floor, in his wheelchair, and he was greeted and his chair pushed along by the people dancing. You should have seen the big smile as we rolled along. Thanks for bringing your Dad, Hendle. He was a knowledgeable, kind and caring person,
and will be missed by many.

I knew Bill Pendleton only slightly, through his membership in the American Legion, Post 14, here in Lawrence. He was always the kind and gentle "elderly," faithful Legion member, who participated in events as much as he could and was always gracious and appreciative of any favor shown to him. His regal presence is greatly missed at Legion events.

Uncle Bill was an incredibly kind and generous man. When I was in Lawrence during college we would get together for lunch occasionally at Free State Brewery, or he would invite me to brunch with him at Alvamar. Always the gentleman, he never failed to stand and hold my chair whenever I sat down.
He also opened his home to me for a few weeks one summer when I had a gap between apartment leases. Sadly, he had a stroke a few days into my stay. But I was glad I was there to take him to the hospital. The emergency room doctor commented that they had never had a grand-niece come in before.
Bill supported the KU School of Engineering, and occasionally we would run into each other at events they hosted with neither of us knowing the other would be there. At one such event, Bill, who was chatting with the Dean of the School of Engineering said, Why hello Katie, I didn't know you were going to be here. (He's the only person I allowed to call me Katie after somewhere around second grade.) I responded, Oh hi Uncle Bill! What are you doing here? And Dean Bell interrupted with Hold on.so you two know each other?!?
Our tradition of going to KU events continued when Bill invited me to go with him to the Golden Jayhawks Celebration hosted by the KU Law School. A Golden Jayhawk is anyone who has graduated fifty or more years ago. I met him at his apartment, and we rode over together and had a great time! He saw old friends and was greeted by faculty with a warm reception. It was really fun to see him having such a wonderful time.
Bill was soft-spoken, but always had the best stories. Some of my favorites were about working in the cannery, or playing basketball with the Naismith boys (who, according to Bill, played pretty dirty). He was a kind soul and I will miss him dearly.

Bill and my mother were classmates at KU, and I very much enjoyed our friendship and fellowship as Lawrence attorneys for over four decades. Bill was always kind to me, and was genuinely supportive of my efforts on the Lawrence Board of Education from 1991 to 1995, which I will always remember fondly. Many Lawrence and Douglas County residents will miss Bill greatly, and I'm one of them.

Bill was so many things. A lawyer, a judge, a lover of history and of Douglas County and our country, a warrior, a farmer, an engineer (amphibious, railroad, and of the antique one-cylinder engines), a son, a brother, a father, a Shad, a son of Wooglin, a gentleman, and a great friend. I enjoyed meeting Helen, Steve, and other members of Bill's family through the years, and am so sorry, for you and for all of us, at the loss of a truly wonderful man. If I can swing it, am attaching a great picture of Bill, and me, taken in October 2012 by Hendle. God bless you all.
