Whitney Van Dyke Obituary

Whitney Van Dyke

Born, June 24, 1988, Whitney was a happy go lucky, fun loving young lady despite the many struggles she had in her life. She had a way of making each person she met feel special. Whitney was one of those people that you meet and never forget. Her smile, laugh, and joy for life was contagious. She was always kind and caring, selflessly giving to others in everything that she did.

Whitney was a 2008 graduate from Oskaloosa High School where she was involved in basketball, FCCLA, 4-H, and the Heart of America Morgan Horse Club. She was member of the Rural, Sarcoxie and McLouth/Union TWP volunteer fire departments in Jefferson County. She worked at Lonnie's Recycling in Lawrence for 6 years and at Nelson's Landing in Leonardville sine 2013.

Whitney was KU Women's Basketball's #1 fan. Attending home games with her Grandfather; you could always count on Whitney to be in the stands behind the KU bench cheering on her team. Win or lose Whitney never gave up and continued to cheer for the Lady Jayhawks to the bitter end.

Whitney was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on March 28, 2014. She bravely endured six months of treatment and died peacefully on September 22, 2014 at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Whitney leaves behind her parents, Doug and Lisa Schmitt of Leonardville, grandparents, Richard and Ann Ailor of Lawrence, Dennis and Carla Schmitt of Perry, Aunt, Uncle, and Cousins Sarah, Gary, Sam, and Ben Walters of Lawrence and her beloved dog Riley.

A celebration of Whitney's life will be held on Sunday, September 28th 3pm at Abe and Jake's Landing in Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to KU Endowment in support of women's basketball. Send donations in honor of Whitney Van Dyke (KU WBB) to KU Endowment, P.O. Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044 or give online at www.kuendowment.org/givenow.

When Whitney was a little girl at Century school, I was privileged to be her friend. Knowing her taught me so much about what it means to be a good friend, and how to be strong and keep smiling through adversity. Although this was a long time ago, I'm sure that her strength of spirit and contagious joy remained the same through the rest of her too short life. Love and prayers to Doug and Lisa, Whitney will always have a special place in our hearts.

When Whitney was a little girl at Century School, it was my privilege to be her teacher. Though it has been many years, I have to believe she remained the same loving person for the rest of her too-short live. Lisa, Doug, you have my sincere condolences over the loss of your remarkable child.

Whitney was a bright light in the lives she touched during her 26 years of life. Whitney certainly touched our lives when our girls were in 4-H together, even though Whitney was born with Cerebral Palsey she never let that stop her from reaching for the stars. Whitney even found me in the Courthouse when I started to work for the Meadowlark District, she would stop and chat with me. We are heartbroken for her parents Doug and Lisa in their loss. Molly and Whitney shared the same birthday and Molly thought that was so awesome and we agree. We are lifting Doug, Lisa and Whitney in prayers. May the Lord comfort you in this loss and keep Whitney close in our hearts. Love you Whitney.
