Obituaries Violet Jean Woodward 1918 - 2011 Lawrence Violet Woodward Funeral services for Violet Jean Woodward, 93, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Carbondale Cemetery in Carbondale. Mrs. Woodward died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born March 5, 1918, in Lyndon, the daughter of Thomas and Florence Caldwell Finlay. She grew up near Carbondale. Mrs. Woodward was a homemaker and a retired business manager for the Kansas School for the Blind in Kansas City, Kan. Prior to this, she was a business manager for the Kansas University Medical Center and the Kansas Department of Personnel. She retired in 1983. Mrs. Woodward was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star, Social Order of the Beauceants, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She married Melvin E. Woodward May 20, 1939, in Topeka. He preceded her in death July 6, 1995. Survivors include a daughter, Judith L. McNish and husband Ron, Overland Park; a son, Jon M. Woodward and wife Vickie, Lawrence; a sister, Sara Allen, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; four granddaughters, Kimberly Turner, Sarah Melius, Amanda Davis and Ashley Woodward; and a great-grandchild. The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family suggests memorials to the Central United Methodist Church or to the Rainbow Girls, sent in care of the mortuary. Online condolences may be sent to warrenmcelwain.com.
