Verle Weems Obituary

Verle George Weems

Family and friends are mourning the death of Lawrence resident Verle Weems. Mr. Weems passed away August 20.

A Kansas native, Weems spent many years in California after being discharged from the US Navy in 1971. His four-year Navy career included two tours of the waters of Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He returned to Kansas to raise his young family with wife Yvonne Eskridge Weems. The couple was married 44 years and had two children: Mark Weems of Oskaloosa, and JoDee Weems Pelkey of Carthage, Mo.

A man who loved working with his hands, Mr. Weems was often sought out by family members and friends to get their cars repaired. Every repair came with a smile and a shared joke. Mr. Weems was known for his sense of humor, easy laughter, dedication to family and country, and willingness to go the extra mile to help someone. He served the American Legion as an Honor Guard member.

While in California he was partners with father-in-law Virgil Eskridge in Red Bluff Janitorial Service. He most recently worked for Kansas University Memorial Unions, specifically at the Burge Union.

He is survived by wife Yvonne; son Mark; daughter JoDee; daughter-in-law Tammi Weems; son-in-law Rick Pelkey; grandsons Levi Saving, Clayton Saving, and Easton Weems; twin brother Merle Weems and his wife Joyce; brother Ronnie Weems and his wife Karen; sister Patricia Brown; brother Richard Weems and his wife Shirley; brother Eric Weems; sister Cecilie Stipp and her husband Jim; step mother Lu Weems; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Mr. Weems was preceded in death by mother Annabelle Smith Weems, father Cecil Weems and sister Katherine Marie Jasper.

Mr. Weems had requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance be made to Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church Youth Group or Building Fund. Mr. Weems final resting place will be among his fellow veterans at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

He is the best brother-in-law. Married to a gal who is like a sister. We worked together at the bakery but dated and married his twin brother. He'll always be in my thoughts and memories.

Missed you before you even left. Gone to soon but will never be forgotten by your family or friends. The family chain has yet another link broken but know we will see you again. What a reunion you are having with other loved ones that went before you. Luv you.
