Timothy Cudd Obituary

Timothy Alan Cudd

Timothy Alan Cudd died peacefully at Haven Hospice Center in Gainesville, FL on August 26, 2012. He is survived by his beloved wife Evelyn, daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Avi Baumstein, grandchildren Anna and Caleb, mother Bernice Daniels, father and step-mother, Kermit and Anne Cudd, sister and brother-in-law Ann Cudd and Neal Becker, nephews Alex and Thomas Becker, brother Ben Cudd and sister-in-law Lynn McCarty, and loyal dogs Tazer and Sheba.

Born Sept. 2, 1956 in Rapid City, SD, Tim attended school through Jr. High in Worthington, Ohio and graduated from Mt. Vernon (Ohio) H.S. His lifelong interest in horses sent him to England for British Horse Society certification and next led him to the University of Tennessee where he became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced veterinary medicine in Lexington, KY where he developed the first private practice neo-natal foal clinic in the U.S. Because of his growing interest in research, Tim moved on to the University of FL where he earned a Ph.D in physiology, specializing in endocrinology of the mother-fetal interaction controlling parturition. In 1994 he joined Texas A&M faculty where he ran a large National Institutes of Health funded lab devoted to more effectively diagnosing and treating fetal alcohol syndrome. He coordinated the physiology course for first year veterinary students and worked tirelessly to improve teaching methods that would achieve his goal of developing compassionate and caring veterinarians.

Tim and Evelyn cared for their horses on Cantata Ranch, a farm he dearly loved sharing with Evelyn's third grade classes, his grandchildren and nephews. They bred, trained and competed dressage horses. Their first foal won numerous breed show awards and was a finalist at the Young Horse Championships in Lexington, Kentucky. Tim was devoted to his family and pets and will be remembered and sorely missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests gift contributions to Haven Hospice in Gainesville , FL or the ALS Society. A celebration of Tim's life will be held on Sunday September 2, 2012, at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church on West Newberry Road at 4:00.

I would like to add my condolences on Tim's passing. I knew Tim through his research and through conversations we had at scientific meetings.

Tim was a lovely, generous soul who cared deeply about his work. Even more, he was enthusiastic about the work of others. His incisiveness and openness were a gift to all whom he met.

Best wishes to you in this trying time and know how many lives Tim touched.

Mrs. Cudd,
I was one of the final members of Dr. Cudd's 2011-2012 physiology class at Texas A&M. I wish to send you and your family my deepest sympathy. Dr. Crudd was a wondeful teacher and you could tell that he loved what he did and that he was go at it. He once told a store about mermaids in Tiki-Tiki Florida in relation of gaseous nitrogen being expressed into the blood stream that I will never forget. Even though it was a stort time, I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn from his years of experience. I know it comes as little comfort, but I am sure that Dr. Cudd and John Wayne are riding together tonight, talking about the women and the horses that they love.

Evelyn,
I am in awe of both you and Tim for the gallant journey you have both traveled these last couple of years. It was the continuation of a life well spent... Tim's contributions to teaching and research were such a well matched addition to the Physiology Department at TAMU. He was a collaborator and collegue in the best sense of the words; The gift of Tim was indeed a good one. And, I can not complete this message without offering words of encouragement directly to you ...Our entire family will never ever forget Ms. Obnoxious and the wonderful third grade experience Matthew had (he is now a second year vet student at Auburn). Those pearls of education to which he was exposed....and the veterinary and graduate students through Tim's tutelage - are the memories that follow for a life time...they motivate us, committing us to being "of like" in our interactions as future educators-no matter the profession we choose. Together, you and Tim were/are an impressive team. Our family's thoughts are with you evermore.
