I know this comes waay after his passing, but as I sit in my Director of Communications chair I am reminded that my foundation for journalism was planted by Prof. Frederickson. He flashed across my now 60+ year-old mind as I found a headline typo in a newspaper. And, I'm always wary of typos because of him. His biggest contribution to me while in his classes was to read the paper daily. He taught me to read at least the headline and first 2-3 paragraphs and that should tell the story! (Not these days -- too much editorial.) Thank you for truly teaching me something that I use and love. RIP.

Ted Fred was the best. I had him for Reporting 1 in 1990 and Media law. He was fabulous and amusing. Condolences to you all.

My dear friend and colleague for 25 yrs. Ted and Merrilee stood with us at our wedding, rowed alongside us canoeing on our honeymoon in the Boundary Waters and joined us on countless spring and winter break trips. He was as fine a human being as I have ever known and I will think of him often. Our heartfelt condolences to Merrilee, Chloé, Max, family and friends.

I wouldn´t be the writer I am today without Ted Fred´s direct and helpful guidance and feedback...not sure I would be a nytimes subscriber without his news quizzes, either. Of course Ted Fred was an EXCELLENT teacher but he was kind and thoughtful and took a genuine interest in his students. We talked a lot about food, the joys of swimming in cold northern lakes, and how Obama is certainly Rawlsian. My love to his family, countless friends and colleagues.

Ted Fred made Law of Communication a shared and valuable experience at the WAW School of Journalism, and he was loved and respected by so many students and colleagues. Peace and strength to those he leaves behind.

No one has done more to teach me the fundamentals of journalism than Ted Fred. He not only was one of my many teachers at KU, but was my primary advisor. I find myself saying things he taught me years ago to journalists I hire today. He was kind, he was wise, he didn't take himself too seriously and he was a great example of how we should practice journalism. I'm better for having known him.

My favorite memory of Ted is sitting on the porch in Tonganoxie after an excellent dinner he cooked. He and my husband John were pretty well able to solve the problems of the world over a good beer and a beautiful sunset. His quick mind and masterful way with words is a great loss. He was so lucky to have such a supportive family. Love to Merrilee and all his family

I was very saddened to learn of Ted's passing. The entirety of our relationship was based on a gazillion short conversations in the Robinson Gymnasium locker room over many years as I was lacing my running shoes and he was putting on his swimming togs. Those conversations were short, varied and memorable. He was an insightful, humorous man who didn´t take himself too seriously. The last time I saw him was a random encounter at the Lawrence Beer Company 2-3 years ago. I hadn´t seen him in several years and was delighted to see him --- I´m glad I have him a big hug. RIP, Ted. I miss you and our little talks.

Ted was a mentor of mine at KU from 1982-84. I knew him as wise and I trusted him. He came to my final book launch party in December 2018 to wish me well, and I had never felt more honored in my life. I hadn´t seen him in decades, and suddenly there he was!!
Please know that the memory of Ted Fred was cherished by far more people than we will ever know...

"Ted Fred" was one of my favorite professors when I earned my grad degree at KU's J-School. He made media law my favorite class. Ted nurtured curiosity and encouraged students to challenge assumptions and think deeply about legal cases. My condolences to his family and friends.
