Steven Anderson Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and singular character Steven M. Anderson passed away at home on May 8, 2025. Never constrained by expectations, his death came as a surprise even after a long battle with cancer. No traditional services are planned.

He was born September 7, 1950, in Ottawa, KS, the oldest of 5 children, to Glen I. Anderson and DeLores (Horst) Anderson. He grew up in Topeka, KS and graduated from Topeka West High School in 1968. He graduated from the University of Kansas Business School in 1972.

He married Susan L. Campbell in 1981. It was a long and happy marriage, inspirational to many. In retirement, Steve and Susan went on many near- and far-flung adventures. They found joy everywhere they went.

He spent the early part of his career working for his father's construction company throughout the midwest. In 1983, he left Kansas and set out for Boulder, CO to begin a long career in software development. He founded an earthwork software company in 1986. He moved to a large construction software company in Portland in 1990. In 1995, he co-founded a software consultancy and development firm where he worked until his retirement in 2015. He was a valued mentor to many coworkers in the nascent enterprise software field.

His mother, DeLores, died in 2006 and his father, Glen, died in 2016. He is survived by sister Dana, Columbus, OH, brother David, Oxford, MS, brother Jett, Scottsdale, AZ, and brother Jason, Baldwin City, KS. His son, Luke, lives in Eden Prairie, MN with his wife Amy and Steve's two grandsons, Isaac and Patrick. His daughter, Paige, lives in Boulder, CO with her husband Nate and one further grandson forthcoming.

He was a lifelong lover of reading and technology. Steve will be missed in many ways, but perhaps foremost for his distinctively enlightening and animated conversation. A confirmed curmudgeon, his barbed wit offended friends and strangers alike for over 60 years.

The family suggests memorials in Steve's name to Just Food and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary 120 W. 13th St. Lawrence, KS 66044.

I was blessed to know Steve as a boss and mentor. He was one of the smartest men I´ve known. The world is smaller and not the same without him.

Although we met Susan & Steve later in life, they became beloved friends. They both were such fun and we have many, special memories of C & P dinners with them; they were great hosts for our first one with lobsters! Our group cruise through the Panama Canal was one I will always remember.
