Shirley Ann Mitchell

Shirley Ann Payne Mitchell, 86, was born October 30, 1926 in Madelia, Minnesota. She graduated from St. Barnabus Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1946. After her graduation, she came to Wadsworth, Kansas with the Cadet Nursing Corps, where she met John S. Mitchell, to whom she was married on October 25, 1947. Shirley and John had six daughters: Myrna (Ron, dec.) Filley, Melinda (Jerry Shuck) Mitchell, Melissa (Bill) Mitchell-Wilson, Sally (Patrick) Nowlan, Sue (Michel) Bower, and Sydney Hobbs. Shirley worked as an RN at Cushing Memorial and St. John's Hospitals and Medicalodge in Leavenworth, KS. In 1973, Shirley entered the nurse practitioner class at the University of Kansas Medical Center. After completing this training, she worked as an advanced registered nurse practitioner for Dr. Paul Johnson.

Shirley was an elder emeritus at First Christian Church in Leavenworth, and held the positions of Chairman of the Board and President of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Sewing Guild, and enjoyed cross-stitching, reading, and music. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband John. She is survived by her six daughters, two sisters and two brothers, a sister-in-law, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Both the visitation and the memorial service for Shirley was held at First Christian Church, at 6th and Seneca Streets in Leavenworth, KS. Visitation for the funeral was held Thursday evening, May 9, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The memorial service was Friday afternoon, May 10, 2013 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society, care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been made by Davis Funeral Home.
