When we shared an office space years ago I so enjoyed Shirley's intelligence, warmth and sense of humor. She was teaching a seminar on time management then and I asked her what the key was. She said, "Oh just do everything as fast as you can."

Shirley made a difference in her life and career--a strong woman who bore much with grace. Both Dick and I were glad to have known her.

Carol, I am so sorry to read about your mother’s passing. I like her choice of wanting to be reincarnated as a crow. A very intelligent, curious, and sassy bird. Joseph and I send our fondest wishes to you, Bill, Pippi, and Zander.

Shirley was one of the first women I met when I came to KU in 1972. We were both just starting out, she in administration and I in sociology. I was in awe of this Shirley as she was navigating being KU’s first Director of Affirmative Action, that itself new and uncertain terrain. We were very happy to find one another and shared early reactions over dinners at the Eldridge House, with its now quaint “club” and “dues” requirements to have a glass of wine. A toast now to Shirley’s enduring bravery and cheer and the devotion of her loving husband.
