Sherry Holmes Obituary
She died Wednesday September 14, 2016, at her home.
Sherry was born January 20, 1939, the daughter of Joseph Monroe McCanles and Helen Norma Winters. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1957. She later earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Kansas in Microbiology. She worked at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Cancer Research and the National Institute of Health in Washington DC.
She married Deane R. Holmes Sr. in June, 1961, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on July 3, 2015.
Survivors include a son Deane R. Holmes Jr. and wife Aimee, Lawrence; a grandson, Adam J. Holmes, Gardner; sister-in-law Deanna Marquette and husband Dick, Overland Park; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to University of Kansas School of Microbiology, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Sherry was one of my dearest friends. We met while volunteering as docents at the Wornall and Major's houses. We shared a love of history, research, people, genealogy and laughter.
I have never met anyone who had such a wonderful sense of humor; or who was more fascinated by local history.
I've never met anyone who was a smarter, kinder, more loyal friend.
I know you are resting in peace, sweet Sherry.
