Sheldon Cohen Obituary

Dr Sheldon H. Cohen (born May 21 1934) and Virginia Y. Cohen (born May 11 1938), married almost 55 years died together in a multi-vehicle traffic accident on the Kansas Turnpike Tuesday afternoon, July 11, 2017.

They met at Washburn in the early 60's as teachers of chemistry and biology. Sheldon progressed to chairman of the chemistry department, Vice President and Provost, and Executive Directory of Planning. Virginia took time from teaching to raise their children along with being involved with Nautilus Club and other community activities. They were both strong supporters of Washburn University and its teaching mission.

Survived by sons Alex, Will, and Gerry and their wives Jill Cohen, Lee Lim and Jenny Kirby and grandchildren Ryan Schultz, Madison Kirby and Mason Cohen.

A memorial service will be in Topeka Kansas at the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center (corner of 17th and Jewell) on Wednesday, July 19 from 1 to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to the Sheldon & Virginia Cohen Fund for Excellence in the Sciences at Washburn University (c/o Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation). Bless you, Dr Cohen, for teaching me how cool chemistry really is. You will both be missed!

August 24, 2017

We were devastated to learn today, August 24, 2017 of the sudden death of KU graduate school long time friend, Shel Cohen and his wife. Shel was Wayne's best man at a time very close to the arrival of their first child and we were very grateful that he made the effort on that day, July 31, 1965.

Since going our separate ways, Wayne as professor of chemistry at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN and Shel at Washburn University, we've kept in touch. We relished Shel's post Christmas missives and looked forward to them each year...stories of children growing up, orchids, and dealing with Ginny's eyesight issues.

One memorable time was during the week after the disastrous tornado which went through Topeka and hit the Washburn Univ. area very, very hard. We had planned to get together during a trip from St. Paul MN to Tempe, Arizona where Wayne was going to begin his first sabbatical year at ASU. Amazingly Shel and Ginny managed to be perfect hosts despite the various issues they had to deal with in their home. (powdered glass placed by the wind in drawers by the storm, for example!).

Our deepest condolences to their children and the entire family!

Dan and I are saddened by this tragedy. May the love Sheldon and Virginia have shown you carry you through out your lives. I remember how proud they were when they spoke of their children and grandchildren. May God wrap his loving arms around your family and may you be comforted by one another and the fact that the love and bond you share is eternal.

To Alex, Will, Gerry, and all the Cohen family:

Please accept sympathies for such a tragic loss from the Guarr family. (We were your neighbors from across the street in Topeka. The house was sold to the Casper family when we moved.)
I know your parents will be missed and fondly remembered by everyone who met them, and especially by residents of the old neighborhood.

The Guarr family, David Guarr, (Shawnee KS) and Judy, Mike, and Tom.

To The Family of Dr. and Mrs. Sheldon Cohen.

My condolences to the family as I know these two fantastic people will be missed by both family and former students. I knew Dr. Cohen but never had a class from him but I had classes with Mrs. Cohen in Biology. God Bless both of them.
