Shannon Godfrey Obituary

Shannon Godfrey, who has died at the young age of 41, was a beloved daughter, sister, niece, cousin, and friend who saw boundless possibility and dynamic love in all. A master of loyalty, she cleared hardships from paths of those close. Shannon loved with an electric heat, not comfortable for all, but necessary for those compatible.

Of parents Diana and Bill, Shannon was born in Aurora, Colorado, and soon after moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where she spent her childhood.

As an adult, Shannon lived in Lawrence, Kansas where she expanded her friend circle and brought joy--in its most absurd and authentic nakedness--to all. There, she nursed her father Bill through his decline of terminal cancer. Through personal loss, Shannon curated skills to steamroll others with kindnesses, even during their darkest moments. She shone--her empathy and care unconfined--children and animals holding a special place in her heart.

Singularly hilarious, Shannon was able to turn the mundane into delight, and did so in order to make those around her happy. It worked. Appreciation was given often and easily--sometimes loudly, but also softly. "Our love is real and strong," she might tell a friend as easily and often as taking a sip of water. And it was guaranteed that she'd check in if a loved one was struggling--the first to arrive and the last to leave.

She briefly lived in Austin, Texas where she volunteered for Hospice Austin before moving back to Lawrence.

Her patience, empathy, forgiving spirit, and shameless positivity will leave many moments lacking, but her legacy will thrive in each life that she touched, as well as the later generations.

Shannon was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister Paula, and her brother Bradley. Shannon adored her family and mourned the loss of them daily. Survived by her aunt Janice Godfrey, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Uncle James Godfrey of Lakewood, Colorado, cousins John and Gina Godfrey, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and cousin Jeff Godfrey of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma--her extended family--Shannon's family extended beyond blood to her dozens of close friends worldwide. All grieve her loss, but more importantly, all are grateful to have lived alongside her.

A memorial, a celebration of her life, will be held on Monday, June 11th at 5:00pm at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas.

Shannon, I remember you as a sweet little girl in my Brownie Troop, playmate to my April, with such quiet bravery. When I think of you and your family, I will remember how they adored you, the baby of the family. You truly were loved.
