Sandra Medved Obituary
Sandra Jo Medved passed quietly at her residence in Lawrence, KS on March 25th, 2025, at age 72. Sandra was a loving, generous, and compassionate woman, sister, mother, aunt, and friend who left us far too soon.
She was born on December 6th, 1952 to Joseph and Meleva Sachen of the Strawberry Hill neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas. Her parents both preceded her in death.
She is survived by her two children Nicholas Medved, Yorktown, VA, and Brooke Medved, Lawrence, KS; her two sisters Kathy Sachen Gute, Scottsdale, AZ, and Stephanie Lawhorn, Lawrence, KS; her brother Steve Sachen, Minneapolis MN; her nieces Susan Gering and Lauren Sachen; her nephew, Christopher Lawhorn; and her great nephew Jackson Gering.
Sandra attended primary school at St. Anthony's Catholic School in Kansas City, KS and high school at Bishop Ward in Kansas City, KS, where she was class secretary. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and continued her education with advanced training and certification in Medical Technology.
Sandra worked as an assistant at the University of Kansas Medical Center research labs before becoming laboratory supervisor at Trinity Lutheran Hospital and then clinical laboratory manager for Humana Health Systems. After leaving the health care field, Sandra worked in the insurance industry until retirement.
Sandra was a dedicated mother, who deeply loved her children, celebrating their successes, and supporting them through difficult times. She enjoyed crafts, particularly sewing, and was a remarkable seamstress. Sandra loved upcycling pillows and blankets from vintage clothing, and created original costumes for her children from their first Halloweens through high school productions. She loved the arts, particularly the theater. She was an avid traveler, and especially enjoyed road trips. Her keen memory made her an excellent trivia team member, and she also loved to play board games and build jigsaw puzzles. A sports fan, Sandra cheered for the Chiefs and loved the Royals, but above all else, she was a diehard Kansas Jayhawk. March Madness was one of her favorite times of the year, especially in 2008, when she joined her family in San Antonio to watch KU play in the Final Four, and was caught on camera by CBS after the title game, celebrating the overtime win with her sisters.
Sandra's heart was always open to others, so no matter the situation, anyone around her would feel at home. She donated her time, as well as her organization and design skills, to help with charity events and auctions. Sandra's kindness and generosity touched and spread through so many people in countless ways. She will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Sandra's life will be planned at a future date.
Any donations may be made in Sandy's memory to Cottonwood, Inc., 2801 W. 31st Street, Lawrence, KS 6604 or the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicago, IL.
