Robert Simpson Obituary

Robert M. Simpson, 89, passed away on March 18, 2024, at his home in Lawrence, Kansas. Born to Lloyd and Martha (McSpadden) Simpson on May 24, 1934, in Wichita, Kansas, Robert (Bob) grew up in Wichita, Kansas City, Missouri and Newton, Kansas. He graduated from Newton High School in 1953. Bob attended the University of Kansas, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Architecture.

Bob married Carol Elaine Fluharty, on June 8, 1957, and he would be the first to say they had the most fantastic marriage anyone could ever imagine. After college, Bob's military career took them to many parts of the United States and the world. He was commissioned in the Army artillery and was later transferred to Corps of Engineers.

Bob proudly served our country for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his military service, Bob held many positions from Artillery Forward Observer to Combat Engineer Company Command and Facilities Engineer. His military career included assignments to Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. He twice served as President of the Society of American Military Engineers. Bob received a master's degree in architecture while in the military.

After retiring from military service, Bob moved to Lawrence where he was associated with Hedges Real Estate for 20 years. He retired from real estate in 1999. An avid golfer, Bob was a member of Lawrence Country Club for over 40 years, serving as club president for one year.

Bob loved his family dearly and was a very proud father and grandfather. Bob and Carol had four children, Mark (Mickey) Simpson, Scott Simpson, Nancy (Hank) Jeronimus and Jeff Simpson. He was grandfather to six grandchildren, Robert Jeronimus, Elizabeth Jeronimus, Jack Jeronimus, Olivia (Dylan) Gottschalk, Stacia (Adam) Borker and Alexa Simpson.

With Carol often at his side, Bob befriended many. Always dressed for the occasion, Bob had a big smile, a contagious laugh and a gregarious presence that exuded warmth and enthusiasm. His enthusiasm was always at its highest when sharing stories of Carol and him or proudly providing updates on his children and grandchildren.

A private graveside service celebrating and honoring Bob's life will be held at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing, Kansas.

I just learned if Bob´s passing. He was always my date at my husband and Carol´s class reunions. What a great dancer and always tried to trick me with vodka tastings! A great family to be sure and always the perfect dinner host. Roman 8:28

I spent many happy hours in the Simpson household. Bob and Carol were wonderful hosts and I always enjoyed having a good chat with them. Bob always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile for everyone. Thinking about him makes me smile. Sending love and condolences to the extended Simpson family.

I am sorry for your loss, Scott. Your Dad´s story is one of caring and compassion. I see him in the happiness you have created for my family through the years. May the void he left be replaced by his legacy of love and service. Your Mom contributed to this legacy with such grace and ease. My condolences to you and your family from mine.
