Richard Smith Obituary

Richard Meredith Smith, age 75, passed away December 11, 2021 in Kansas City, MO. He was born in Topeka, KS on November 27, 1946 to Meredith Miller Smith and Elizabeth (Betty Nan) Hemphill Smith. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Lawrence and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1964.

After finishing a Bachelor of Art's degree in Political Science from the University of Kansas (1968), he served in the Air Force and was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA. Later he also earned a master's degree in accounting. Returning with his family to Kansas in 1979, he farmed and established an accounting practice in Tonganoxie, retiring in 2010.

In 1969, he married Nancy Hurley and they had two children, Alison and Adrienne. Richard is preceded in death by Nancy, who passed away in 2006.

In 2007, Richard married Linda Garrison. Together they faced his significant health battles.

Richard is survived by his wife Linda, his daughters Alison (Dave S.; Tabitha & Blake) and Adrienne (Boy; Roxy & Liv), and his step-children Christine (Bob; Jacob & Dylan); Rachel (Jeremy; Matthew, Madelyn & Benjamin); Sarah (Matthew; Ella & Christian) and James.

Per Richard's request there will be no funeral services.

I hadn't seen Richard in several years. He and Nancy Two of the best at LHS in the 60s. Their wonderful daughters attest to the kind of people and role models they were.
