Richard Green Obituary

Richard Allen "Dick" Green

Memorial services for Richard Allen "Dick" Green, 74, Lawrence, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private family inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Mausoleum. He passed away on September 6, 2013 at Brandon Woods in Lawrence, KS.

He was born June 26, 1939 in Canton, Illinois the son of Van Arvard and Alene Marguerite (Fuller) Green.

Dick graduated from Pratt High School and attended Pratt Junior College. In 1962 he graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Biological Science with a minor in Chemistry.

He played football for The University of Kansas from 1959-1961, and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was President of The K Club at KU from 1990-1991. Kansas Football was his passion, he lived for football Saturdays every fall.

After graduating from KU, Dick taught Biology and coached football, basketball and track at Hays High School. He spent much of his life's work as a pharmaceutical representative.

Richard lived life fully and passionately. He was an amazing poet. He was also the life of the party with funny jokes, a great smile, and was a magician on the grill. He loved to host his friends and family with amazing food and wine. We know he is now in a perfect and beautiful place, but we will certainly miss his good natured wit, his killer beef tenderloins, but mostly his unending love for his family and for all people.

He is survived by his two daughters, Elizabeth Anne 'Betsy' Coons of Lawrence, KS and Sarah Kathleen 'Katie' Green of St. Joseph, MO; son-in-laws, Scott T.R. Coons and Robert Dunlap; two grandsons, Kolby S. Coons, Los Angeles, CA and Jacob Coons, Lawrence, KS; and his sister, Joyce Green-Brady, and her husband Larry Brady, of Kansas City.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials in his name to either the American Parkinson's Foundation or The University of Kansas Williams Fund and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

I knew Dick for a brief time here in Wichita before he moved back to Lawrence. I was privileged to be a guest at his table and bible study through a mutual friend. He was a great guy and fun to be around. My condolences to his family.

Dear Joyce & family,
What a very sad day to learn of Dick's passing. Oh what great conversations & for a time...email exchanges...we enjoyed. He never failed to mention my mom, & how much he loved her way back to our Sunday School days in Pratt. He was one of a kind, his heart & courage took up lots of space in this world. Please know my thoughts are with each of you as you recall so many memories of this special man. I will never forget his voice or his humor. Blessings & peace to you at this most difficult time.

Betsy, Katie & Families,

Though we had a rather brief time to get to know your father, Dick, or you, we thank you for the privilege to have been even a small part of his last days. Now know that our support is available to you as you engage the days, weeks and months ahead without him. We are just a call away with a listening ear and caring heart.

You will remain in our thoughts as in so many ways you will continue saying goodbye to your beloved Father as the days pass.

Peace to you,
