This old photo shows how I remember Rex Johnson. My mother Edith worked at the court house, and my dad, Police Judge Bill Pendleton, was often there as well, during both Sheriff Billy Hodson's and Rex Johnson's tenures. Sometimes my brother Steve and I would go visit the old jail. It was scary but Rex (and Billy) were kind and always welcomed us. Seeing the inside of that little jail made me stay on the right side of the law. A few years ago I sent him a letter of appreciation and some old pics of sheriffs, deputies, troopers, etc., including this one, probably taken by my mother. I have never heard one bad word spoken against Rex. What a legacy! Well done, sir. My deepest condolences to all who grieve. May the Lord Jesus comfort them with His peace.

So sorry to hear of Rex´s passing. Dale and family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I worked at Hamm´s office for quite awhile with Rex. He was a good friend to all of us. Lots of stories to share from an interesting life. He will be missed.

So saddened to learn of Rex´s death. Rex & Shirley were compassionate neighbors while growing up as a youngster in Lawrence. My siblings and the Johnson kids could be found roaming the neighborhood looking for a pickup game to play. I remember campaigning for Rex when he was running for the Douglas County sheriff office. He truly showed his character when he came over to our house to speak with my father after I had an accident in 1968 with our Model A coupe on Stull Rd. Our sincere condolences and prayers are extended to Shirley and their children.

My heart goes out to Rex´s entire family. My Dad was Glen Freeman & lived out near Lone Star. He would see Rex & say "how´s my Boo-di today?" Rex was always a nice guy & he and my Dad would roam the fields around here as young boys. Bet he´s waiting to see his old friend!
