Raoul Berman Obituary

Raoul Berman

Raoul Berman, born Aug. 28, 1928 in New York City, passed away Jan. 16, 2014 in Lawrence, after a long illness. Raoul was brought up by his maternal grandparents in Brooklyn after the death of his mother at an early age. He joined the Army, spending 6.5 years serving his country. While deployed in post war Germany, he met Hanelore Neufurth, whom he would marry and have two children, Heidi and Eric. They would divorce some years later. He moved to Kansas City in 1966 and married (Marion) Joyce (nee: Hoffman) in 1967. Along with her three children, Michelle, William and Phillip, and his two, they made their home in Kansas City, Kansas.

Raoul would later attend Kansas University, getting degrees in both Social Work and Human Development and Family Life and then go on to work as a Social Worker in the Topeka school system. Raoul and Joyce would make their home just north of Tonganoxie with their many pets.

After the passing of his best friend and soul mate Joyce in 2002 and then the passing of his stepson Phillip, Raoul would move to Lawrence to spend his final years. He is survived by Heidi Berman of Wichita, Eric Berman and wife Darla of Lawrence, Michelle and husband Mark of Dallas, and William of Clearlake, Ca., grandchildren Lainie and Jake Mazzullo, Meredith French, Sylvia Manners and Jacob Berman, three great-grandchildren, as well as friends and caregivers. The family would like to thank those who helped in his final years, especially Heather McGhee, Helping Hands and also especially the hospice workers of Visiting Nurses. Melissa at VNA, you're the best. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice. A memorial service is pending.

I remember Raoul with much fondness. I worked with him when he was a school social worker in the Topeka Public School system. He was well liked by the school kids and the staff with whom he worked. I remember him starting a chess club at one of our schools that had a large percentage of kids that came from families with more disadvantages. It was a wonderful initiative on his part and beneficial to the kids in the club. His work predated many of the recent initiatives that took place in that area. He also got me back into handball and was both a good teacher and competitor. He had a great left-handed kill shot and routinely beat me. I missed Raoul after he retired. He was the best kind of character; competent, great stories, a great sense of humor and a bon vivant, at least to many of the folks here in Kansas. He often spoke highly of his children and I know will be missed by them. My condolences and thoughts are with them.

Ray, I can still see you playing a wicked game of handball on the court at Hollowbrook Lake, near Peekskill, where my family owned a summer bungalow. Or is my imagination playing tricks on me?
