Philip McKnight Obituary

Philip Charles McKnight Jr. passed away on January 25, 2026, in Lawrence, Kansas, at the age of 84.

Phil was born on May 20, 1941, in Newton, Kansas, the son of Philip Charles McKnight and Margaret Catherine McClymonds McKnight. While his father served in the South Pacific during World War II, Phil was raised by his mother and his maternal grandparents in Walton, Kansas. He often recalled childhood memories of watching trains go by near his grandparents' farm, looking forward to his father's return from the war.

Following the war, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas, where Phil grew up alongside his brother, Robert Lorne McKnight (born in 1947), and sister, Susan Vance McKnight (born in 1949). Phil graduated from Wichita East High School in 1959.

In the summer of 1962, Phil met Melinda Ann Wells while both were serving as camp counselors at Sanborn Western Camps in Florissant, Colorado. Phil earned his bachelor's degree in history and English from the University of Kansas in 1963, and the following year he and Melinda were married. They moved to Palo Alto, California, where Phil pursued graduate studies at Stanford University, earning his Ph.D. in Education and Social Psychology, followed by a postdoctoral position as a Leverhulme Fellow at the University of Stirling in Scotland.

Always a proud Jayhawk, in 1970, Phil returned to Lawrence to join the faculty at the University of Kansas in the School of Education as Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, followed by full Professor in 1987. Over the years, Phil also held several administrative positions within the School of Education. His scholarly work focused on instructional improvement, teacher education, and micro-teaching. Many of Phil's professional papers are preserved in the Kenneth Spencer Research Library at KU and his carefully curated book collection established the Dr. Philip C. McKnight Reading Collection at Joseph R. Pearson Hall.

A grateful recipient of numerous teaching awards throughout his career, Phil's greatest professional honor was working with students. Whether mentoring undergraduates, teaching Western Civilization, serving as academic advisor to several fraternities and sororities, or guiding doctoral candidates, Phil was widely respected for his thoughtful advising and for the genuine relationships he built with those he taught.

Phil was also deeply committed to the Lawrence community. A longtime member of Rotary, Phil served as secretary for many years, and he enjoyed his involvement, leadership roles, and support of several other local organizations. Phil was a loyal supporter and season ticket holder of Kansas Jayhawk basketball and football.

Vacations in Colorado and Wyoming with family were some of his most treasured experiences, and he and his family returned there often. He also loved his four golden retrievers over the years and, above all else, he loved his time with his family.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rob, and his wife, Melinda, who died in 2021. He is survived by his children, Laura Wells McKnight Barker (Clay), Philip Charles McKnight III (Jill), and Caroline McKnight Hexdall (Eric), as well as his nine grandchildren.

Those who knew Phil remember him as a humble, unfailingly kind, and gracious man with a heart of gold and a wonderful sense of humor. He had a genuine interest in those around him, whether old friends or new.

As Phil lived with Alzheimer's disease during the last months of his life, he was supported by the caring staff at Brandon Woods Memory Care and by hospice providers. He was grateful for frequent visits from lifelong friends, children, and grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on May 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vermont Street, Lawrence, Kansas.

Phil will be missed more than words can express, and he will hold a special place in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
