Pete Shelley Obituary

Pete Shelley (1955 – 2018) was the lead singer of the highly influential punk band the Buzzcocks. He died from a heart attack at the age of 63 at his home in Estonia.

Shelley was one of the co-founders of the Buzzcocks, called the pioneers of pop punk. The band was inspired by the Sex Pistols and formed in Manchester in 1975. Shelley had a knack for writing strong pop hooks to go along with the intense energy of the band’s songs.

Though the band never achieved superstardom, they greatly influenced many musicians. Green Day used the pop punk blueprint from their heroes the Buzzcocks to become one of the world’s biggest rock bands. Nirvana, Husker Du, and many other critically acclaimed bands were fans of the band.

The Buzzcock’s biggest hit song was “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve),” which hit number 12 in the UK in 1978. Shelley wrote the classic song about unrequited teenage love.

The band broke up in 1981 and reformed in 1989, continuing to tour and release albums.

Shelley released several solo albums and had a minor hit song in 1981 with his first single, “Homosapien.”

6 years since Pete Shelley sadly passed away.

The years are flying by, but the memories and music from Buzzcocks, will never age.

The harmonies of Shelley and Diggle, the songs, the lyrics, just mean as much to me now, as in my youth, and will never fade, their music is amazing.

Miss You Mr Shelley,
You Died too young, lots of potential new music never to be created or heard, but the pleasure of your life’s back catalogue will be enjoyed by the current ‘Buzzcocks’ generation, and by future generations of an age yet to come.
‘Nostalgia’ lyrics are your window to the future fans.

Sadly Missed,
Stan Rennie,
Hartlepool.

Sadly,
5 years today, since Pete Shelley passed away.
Missing any new music coming from this uniquely talented man, just doesn’t get any easier.

Still Listen to Buzzcocks every single night, the Band baton has passed on to Steve Diggle, but the duo singing in harmonies together, still for me, unbeatable.

Aptly listening and watching the video to ‘Hollow Inside’ right now, which is how I still feel without the spark of new Pete Shelley material ever being released again.

This track after listening to ‘Hold Me Close’ with the line that sums Pete’s, Steve’s and the Buzzcock, musical hold on me, from teenager, to auld Geezer:-

‘Even in the darkest night, yours will be the light that guides me through, There’s No one like You’!

Buzzcocks,
Thank You, for the music, Never Give Up!

Peter Missed,
But never forgotten.

Stan Rennie,
Hartlepool.

3 years now, since we lost the best, and most underrated joint frontman, of any group!
Pete Shelley!

Pete Shelley,
Seen you play live, a few times, I play the Buzzcocks and your music nearly every day, you’ve gave the world, nonstop joy, listening to your music.
The songs and lyrics, from Shelley and Diggle, together with the melodies, as good as anyone’s, but in my eyes, unbeatable.
Thanks for the music, and the memories, it will be played long into the future!

Missed,

I was a student and saw them at Guildford Civic Hall with Joy Division. One thing I never noticed til recent was his humour. Brilliant writer, imo compares favourably to the other Shelley!

November 19, 2019

I was 17 years old, working away from home, in Manchester in 1978, the Buzzcocks with Shelley and Diggle, were a huge influence on my life, still listen to their music every single day of the forty odd years since!
Many concerts to see them, learnt the songs and Full lyrics to flat pack philosophy in a week, to sing along at the concert at the Cock Pit, Leeds, brilliant singer, band, duo with Diggle.

Shattered to lose Pete, before the Albert Hall Concert, couldn't bring myself to still go to see the band.

Totally underestimated and not given the media platform that they deserved, some of the greatest songs never played on the Radio!

The songwriting duo of Shelley and Diggle, as good as anything Lennon and McCartney created!

RIP Pete,

Stan. R

A truly great singer and person, I was a 16 year old punk in 1978 and Pete got myself and my friend in on the "Guest list" at a gig in London, as we had no money. A real punk, a real man. No more can be said. Nick G Basingstoke

I was 24 years old in 1978. Moved to Denver Colorado from New York City. I can't tell you how much time I spent driving around Colorado listening to the Buzzcocks. Countless hours. Ever since 1977-78 Buzzcocks have remained second favorite of all time only tied with the Doors for the number two spot and number one was always the Beatles. That hasn't changed for decades. And I still regularly listen to All of Pete Shelley solo albums . As far as I'm concerned not an average song on any one of them. All worthwhile and enjoyable. Over the past 15-20 years I would tell friends and family that were into music that the Buzzcocks are the only band I know from the sixties and seventies that were still making albums that could actually write songs that I felt were as good or better than their original stuff that made them famous. I love music but I can't think of any other bands from decades ago that is still around that I could say that about. I love the band and I love Pete Shelley and I will miss him. My heart goes out to his family and friends but we are going to have such wonderful memories of him. All happy ones of course.

Mr. Shelley's music changed the lives of many. Some of us never brave enough to follow the lessons of the lyrics.
It all "Seems so real I can see it...and it seems so real I can feel it....so why can't I touch it?" The closest one will ever be to true love. Fond memories of Pete, his music and lyrics weaving it's way into my emotional synesthesia existence.

Only Us. (Pete Shelley R.I.P)

I see the distant scene so clearly
The music that filled my heart;
We were wild with youth and freedom
Only time still keeping us apart.

I see the city streets of always
The music flowing through my hair;
We were untouched and innocent
Only time would ever dare to care.

I see the summer Sun so clearly
The music that filled my days;
We ran so swiftly and passionate
Only time could count the ways.

I see the crying colours so clearly
The music that filled my mind;
Soaked with sweat and happiness
Only time has now left us behind.

I came to Pete's music late in my life, but I'm so glad I found it. He was truly one of the leading lights of pop music in the last fifty years. There will never be another sound like his. I think Pete Shelley was given to us so that we could hear a sound, a pattern, a type of song that no one but him could give to us. That is the blessing of his life, and that is what I will take with me for the rest of mine. He was great, and we all love him and will always miss him. God Bless You, Pete. May you make music forever with God in Heaven.

I am so sorry for the loss of one of the greatest pop song writers of my generation. I interviewed Peter in the US during there Promotion of ,Modern I was told to meet Shelley at the tour bus and was invited in. I remember waiting patiently and was told Pete was finishing watching a football match and he would be meeting me soon. In 10 minutes he finally came out with a smile,we talked about the new album and his early work until he said, sorry mate got to get back to the game. Classic! My thoughts and prayers for the family and band.

Having a pleasant conversation with Pete after a Buzzcocks show at Maxwells in Hoboken was a highlight of my life. Pete telling his road manager to go away "I'm having a conversation" made all that much sweeter. Pete was a great performer and, at least to me, a regular guy without a pretense to being a "star" like so many in the industry. RIP Pete.
