Paul A. Haack

Paul Haack, 78, passed away April 24 in Minneapolis, MN. Paul grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, earned graduate degrees from UW, and directed high school bands, the UW Marching Band, and the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corp before moving to Lawrence in 1966. Paul is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maggie, and children Dennis (Laura) of Hawaii, Don (Brenda) of Wisconsin, Jim (Janna) of Wisconsin, Sarah of Oregon, and Pete (Emily) of Lawrence, and 8 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be in New Brighton, MN on Thursday, May 2. Inurnment will be at Pioneer Cemetery on the KU campus. Family and friends in Lawrence are invited to a reception from 2-6 p.m. in the Centennial Room of the Kansas Union on Saturday, May 4. Memorials may be made to Foundation4SchoolMusic.org.

I love his music arrangements for "Amazing Grace", "Closer Walk", and others. I spoke with him once on the phone about these, and he was a very nice, humble, man. I still play these on my trumpet.

Dr. Haack was a wonderful person and a great mentor. My career path is a direct result of his kindness and helpfulness. I hope I can repay what he taught me by teaching others.

It was a privilege to know Paul, except when he played at my head in City Band. He was always a friend and a great colleague to all. We have missed him in Lawrence.

Paul was my director in the Madison Scouts (1956-1957) and an instructor for my high school band (1958-1959). He was always a gentleman and somehow manged to tolerate my lack of musical skills. MYNWA.

Dear Paul Haack family and friends:
Paul was a kind and gentle soul. I always enjoyed my interactions with him as a colleague and student at the U of M. I never walked away from him without feeling respected and inspired. My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. God bless you and your family!

Although I did not have the pleasure of one of his classes, Paul was a delightful and kind man and I know many that studied with him and had nothing but wonderful comments. May he rest in peace. He will be remembered by a great many.

Dear Haack family,
Paul was my favorite music ed professor not only as an undergraduate at KU but also as a graduate student. He always gave us a challenge with a smile on his face. He was fair and respectful to all. I learned so much in each of his classes. He was a wonderful man and a revered member of the music education profession. I feel honored to have known him. My prayers are with you.

Paul was just the kind of person you could meet once and feel as though you had known him a long time. I was not close to Paul, but I felt he and I were true friends. We were both born in Madison and shared that bond, and I enjoyed sharing memories of growing up there. Paul will be missed.

Pete and family,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dad. I remember him from grade school. Such a nice man. My prayers are with your family.

On behalf of the Ridgway family, we extend our condolences to the Haacks. Paul was a good friend and respected colleague of my father, Bob Ridgway, who also recently passed. Dad enjoyed spending time with Paul immensely, and the stories lived on for years. He enjoyed a nice "Wisconsin Tummy Warmer" on many a cold winter's night. I will always remember Paul for taking the time to write a letter on my behalf to help me get into graduate school, and for visiting our home shortly after my mother passed away over 30 years ago. He was a fine man and a joy to be around.
