Paul Getto Obituary

Paul Rudolph Getto, 76, formerly of Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas, passed away on February 20, 2025, in Niceville, Florida.

Born on May 9, 1948, in Dubois, Pennsylvania to Paul Henry Getto and Winifred Hagberg Getto. Paul led a life dedicated to education, leadership, and advocacy. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1966 before continuing his studies at Kansas University. Paul's passion for learning and guiding others led him to a career as a teacher and principal before transitioning into policy specialization. Throughout his professional journey, Paul remained committed to shaping educational policies that benefited students and communities alike.

Beyond his career, Paul was known for his adventurous spirit and deep appreciation for the world around him. A free spirit with an unshakable commitment to universal values, he embraced life with enthusiasm and an open heart. Whether fishing by the water's edge, tending to a flourishing garden, or engaging in spirited discussions about his KU Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs,, Paul found joy in both quiet moments of reflection and lively exchanges with those around them. Paul was a wordsmith and a delightful story teller.

Paul is survived by his wife, Kathy Theis Getto; step son Chris Thompson (Cynthia); daughter Stacey Lawton (Corbin Adams); sister Jane Getto (Steve); daughters Holly and Erica; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Charles and stepson Marcus Thompson.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Paul's honor with the exact date still to be determined.

Paul's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched-family members, students, colleagues, and friends who will forever cherish his wisdom and unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. Paul asked me to tell those who knew him that he talked up to the very last minute!

I hadn't seen Paul since high school. He was a good kid and clearly a good and productive man.

So sorry to hear about Paul's passing. Paul was a camp counselor of mine years ago. He genuinely changed my life in many ways. His wisdom and insight were invaluable to me and I have never forgotten him. My very best to Charlie and Getto family.
