Mohamadi Issa Obituary

Mohamadi Tompson Issa, Jr., "MJ", passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021. He was 18 years old.

MJ was born on January 20, 2003 in Lawrence, KS. He attended Cordley Elementary School, South (Billy Mills) Middle School, and both Lawrence High School and Lawrence Free State High School, making many friends along the way. In elementary school and middle school, MJ played basketball and in seventh grade found his passion playing football. He was a starting lineman on the Lawrence High School Varsity team his freshman and sophomore years and on the Lawrence Free State High School Varsity team his junior and senior years.

MJ was a talented Sound Cloud rapper and remarkable wordsmith. He loved working with his friends to find the perfect beats for his tracks. He also made sure he had complete control of the aux cord on every car ride, forcing anyone in the car to listen to and rate the songs he loved. And, speaking of cars, it was BMWs all the way for MJ.

A true Sneaker Head, MJ was renowned for his shoe collection and his talents restoring shoes. You could also spot MJ from a mile away for his electric fashion choices and beloved beanies.

We laughed at MJ's wit, were warmed by his kindness, and were amazed by his creativity. We rolled our eyes when he got onto one of his favorite topics and wouldn't let anyone get a word in edgewise. We doubled over in laughter at his uncannily accurate imitations and comedy sketches. We also loved MJ for his soft side, which showed in his expert hugs and in his love for animals, especially for his dog, Shaq, whom he called his "son."

In his short time on earth, MJ touched many lives. He has left us all behind, but our lives are better for having known him. He is survived by his mother, Sandra Issa of Lawrence, his father, Mohamadi Issa, Sr. of Lawrence, his two sisters, Brenna and Lucy Daldorph, and many friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to "Memorial for MJ Issa" at gofundme.com. A Celebration of MJ's Life will be held at 5:00 pm on September 25th at his home at 3300 Westridge Ct., Lawrence, KS. Friends are welcome. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to [email protected]. Mon MJ, je te confirme que tu es et resteras la source d'inspiration de tes parents. Tu seras toujours dans nos pensées et nos prières. Tu me manqueras toujours, ta simplicité et ton envie d'apprendre me marqueront toujours. Je t'aime mon neveu. Tu seras toujours parmi nous. Love

It is lovely to read about MJ on this page. Hearing about his deep and varied interests, gives me and my parents comfort. I know that we wish we had known him better while he was with us.
I am just a few months older than MJ. The unique experiences of growing up today (early use of computers and technology, pop culture, the climate crisis) are things that have always made me feel a special kinship with the young people in my family. As they grow up, I sincerely wish them luck and I am excited to hear about what they do next. It is an extremely poignant thing to not be able to watch MJ continue and grow.
My parents and I enjoyed sitting next to Sandra and MJ at family gatherings. We appreciated the special connection we saw between the two, and always felt lucky to get to chat with them for a while.

Sending love and best wishes to Sandra and MJ´s family and friends,
Wesley Rice-Snow

Dear MJ: You were the best hugger ever! I´m so glad to have had you as a nephew, even in the midst of being so sad. I can picture you at peace now. I love you, Dude.
