Michael Wormsley Obituary

Michael Allen Wormsley, known to many as Mike, Moo, Pops, Coach, Mr. Wormsley, Dad, and Grandpa Woms-a-we was born in Orrick, Missouri on September 15, 1951 to Ann and Al Wormsley and raised in Vandalia, Missouri.

Growing up, he enjoyed playing sports and serving as HS class president at Van Far. After graduating from Mizzou, he became a history teacher & mentor, using simulation learning activities (Greek Days, Oregon Trail, Civil War/Slave Days, Indigenous Walk on Columbus Day) to bring history alive in the classroom. Mike enjoyed coaching Middle School and Special Olympics basketball. He was especially proud of his Lady Blue 8th grade girls' basketball team at Cole Co R1, Russellville, MO where he took them on a 36 game winning streak and 4 conference titles. Being a Mizzou Alma Mater living in Kansas didn't faze him a bit as he proudly wore his gold and black. He is survived by his soul mate/wife, Kea Wormsley, and his mother and father -in-law, LoisKay and Kenneth Metzger. He is most proud of being a Father of his four children, Erin Harrleston (Dillard, husband), Kelly White (Michael, husband), George Wormsley, and Zach Wormsley (Dominique Demmert, significant other). He has 4 grandchildren that brightened his days: Sam, Carly, Ben, and Alex White. He is also survived by his sister, Kristy Hopkins and many nieces and nephews. Gratitude to Scott Forkenbrock for giving Mike a kidney to live another 4 years to the fullest. He died peacefully at home on October 28, 2018. A special thanks to a wonderful Hospice team at Douglas County VNA that made it possible for him to be home as he left this world to begin the next exciting adventure. There will be a Celebration of Life Memorial in the near future. Memorial donations may be made to either Polycystic Kidney Foundation or American Cancer Society.

I had Mr. Wormsley as my 8th grade social studies teacher at Central. He made learning fun and really helped fuel my interest in history as a subject on a whole. He made sure that each of the students in his classroom were given respect, and were able to learn in a way that allowed them to absorb the information that they needed to know. Even though we didn't agree on which sports team was the best, I knew I could go to him for any troubles I was having. I'm so happy that I had the opportunity to know him, and so grateful that he was able to spend a little more time here with us after his kidney transplant. Much love to his family and loved ones at this tough time.

Mr. Wormsley was an amazing man, mentor, and teacher who touched the lives of thousands of young people. He was my middle school social studies teacher, and one of the most inspiring teachers I have ever had. He is a huge part of why I am now a middle school teacher! I regret that I never got to thank him for that, but I will remember him always.

I will never forget what an amazing teacher you were to my children. You saw them for each of their unique personalities and they loved you for it. Thank you for being in our lives and sorry you had to go so soon. Much love to the Wormsley family from the Laufers.

Zach and George,
I pray you find peace in time. I am so sorry. Your Dad was a great man. He taught me a lot about saying much without saying much.
Let me know if you are ever in Colorado and want to visit. The mountains have done my soul so much good.

Kea (and Family),
Please accept my sympathy. I have only great memories of Mike in the classroom. When Mike taught at Central, he invited our LHS FYI Club's Cultural Heritage Panel to present to all of his classes about diversity issues. Mike encouraged his students to listen, ask thoughtful questions and to make his classroom a safe place for other students to share their experiences. My students really enjoyed presenting in his room, mainly because of how he respected them.He was a class act. May God comfort you all.
Sincerely,
Diane Ash

Mike gave me a nickname: "Ski-ramp" because of my turned-up nose. I sit in Sunday School class at 1st Presb. Church in Vandalia, MO in the exact same spot where
he gave me that name. Our 1969 class gave him a nickname: "The Worm." Everyone liked Mike.

My sincerest sympathy to the Wormsley family who were our dear neighbors for a few years. I also worked with Mike at Russellville and he truly had a passion for teaching and coaching.

I met Mike shortly after his kidney transplant. Although I only knew him a few years, he made a lasting impression on me. He was one of the smartest, kindest men I'd ever met, and just being around him lifted my spirits. He gave off a rare vibe of love, compassion, empathy and joy. He was devoted to Kea and his children, revered as a teacher and coach, and made such a difference in so many lives. I'll always be happy I got to know him... Rest in peace dear, sweet man.

Mike was a great friend and coach to all of us with Special Olympics. The athletes loved him and enjoyed having them as a basketball coach. He saw the abilities in all! We are all better people because Mike was part of our lives. We will miss him.

After years in the corporate world, teaching Junior Achievement in Mike's room at Central put me on the road to education. He wrote my first recommendation letter. I'll always be grateful.

My most sincere sympathies to Mike's family. Mike and I were in the Van-Far 1969 graduating class. He was our class president that year. Mike was always a "hoot". I knew his parents and siblings as well. Blessings to you all!
