Maxine Mayhew Obituary

Maxine E. Mayhew

04/25/1936 - 01/23/2023

Maxine, 86, of Solomons, MD, passed peacefully on Monday, January 23rd at The Hermitage of Solomons assisted living center where she was a resident for 5 years.

Maxine was born on April 25, 1936, in Seneca, KS. The daughter of George W. and Caroline H. (Siske) Smith the last of eight children. She graduated Seneca High School in 1956.

She met Roy N. Mayhew on a blind date and they married on July 13, 1956, at the First Congregational Church in Seneca. They celebrated 54 years of marriage. They lived in Marysville, KS, until the Kansas Department of Transportation transferred Roy to Lawrence, KS, in 1977. They remained in Lawrence until Roy's passing. Maxine then shared residence between Titusville, FL, and Lusby, MD, where her children lived.

In 1969 Maxine was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa which slowly left her blind over the years. She never let the disease hold her back. In Marysville she cleaned houses and performed ironing services. She liked to sew and embroider. She and Roy traveled many states visiting relatives and friends all over the U.S.

Her joys in life were her family and friends. Maxine was beloved by all.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Roy, her sisters Faye Peppersack and Dorothy Eberly, and four brothers, Clarence, Carvan, Herman and Dorus.

She is survived by her daughter Debra (Scott) Percival, Lusby, MD, and son Monte (Jenny) Mayhew, Titusville, FL, 3 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and an abundance of nieces and nephews.

Maxine will be laid to rest at the Deer Creek Cemetery north of Marysville, KS. A graveside gathering will be planned for the springtime.

Donations in memory of Maxine can be made to University of Kansas Audio-Reader, 1120 W. 11th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044.
