Maud Humphrey Obituary

A Memorial gathering for Maud Gonne Humphrey, 51, Lawrence will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 1301 Rhode Island Street in Lawrence. Maud died February 1, 2012 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Maud was born on November 21st, 1960 in Norwalk, Connecticut, the daughter of Henry B. Humphrey and Deirdre O'Meara Humphrey. She went to grade school in Weston, Connecticut, then attended George Washington University, Portland School of Art, and Kansas University, where she will be receiving her BA degree in American Studies this spring. She was awarded the Undergraduate Research Grant in American Studies this semester, and was recently urged by the department to join their masters program. Unfortunately, these plans were cut short by her untimely passing. Prior to moving to Lawrence in 1988, Maud worked as a photojournalist in Westport, Connecticut. Lawrence became, in her words, her spiritual home. She became an inspiration to the Lawrence community. Maud worked for her last twelve as the office manager of KU's Art History Department, where she was widely loved and respected for her steadfastness, her dry humor, and her extraordinary energy. She was fierce and compassionate in her understanding of humanity and justice. Maud was very serious in her pursuits; by consistently sweeping her family and friends into the intensity of her own life, she compelled them to come up in themselves, in order to keep up with her. She married Keith Charles (Kc) Stanton on November 24th, 2006 in Lawrence. He survives of the home. Survivors include one son, Walter Anton Morris, Chicago IL; four sisters, Nora Humphrey Logan, Brooklyn, NY; Eloise Wolfe Humphrey, Brunswick, ME; Daphne O'M Comaskey, Brunswick, ME; Deirdre Weedy Humphrey, Lawrence, KS; her mother, Deirdre O'M Humphrey; three nieces and three nephews. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Lawrence Humane Society. Online condolences may be sent to www.warrenmcelwain.com.

So terribly sorry to hear about this. When Maud and her sisters were little kids I was their live-in tutor for several months and a close friend. Found out the sad news from Maria Eng (Frieder) who first introduced me to the Humphreys back in 1971. I last saw Squeak here in Portland in 1981 or so. Such a wonderful family and so many spectacular memories of Maud as the beautiful and precocious child that she was. With warm thoughts for her family. Please contact me if you would like ([email protected]).

I am so shocked and deeply saddened by this news. Maud lived next door to me in her brightly painted house for many years. Like her glorious bed of Asiatic lilies out front, her vibrant personality livened up our Centennial neighborhood. She will be sorely missed.
