Mary Jane Chubb, 88, of Baldwin City, KS, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Baldwin City, KS.
She was born Sept 22, 1928 in Chicago, Il, the second of three daughters to Charles Callahan and Ruth Jane (Laury) Callahan of Independence, KS. Mary Jane attended public schools in Independence, graduating from Independence High School with the class of 1946. Following two years at Independence Junior College she followed a long line of family members in attending Baker University where she graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a focus on Home Economics.
Mary Janes first teaching jobs were in Coffeyville and Elk City, KS. In 1958, she and her two sons Jeff and Chuck moved to Baldwin City where she was employed as a home economics teacher at Baldwin High School. In 1965, Mary Jane obtained her Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Kansas. She later became the Guidance Counselor at Baldwin High School until her retirement in 1991.
Retirement was the beginning of Mary Jane's second career of pie making. She and her sister, Charlene Potter, began taking baked goods to the Lawrence Farmers Market. She developed a customer base and began selling pies to a local restaurant and to anyone else who would call and order one or more from her. It was not unusual for her to bake 50 or more pies in a week. She was dubbed the "Baldwin Pie Lady", a title she shared with her sister and which has now passed on to her niece, Charlene Hannon, who carries on the pie baking tradition. Mary Jane was also a talented quilter and made many valued quilts for her family.
Mary Jane was a member of the Osage Indian tribe, Chapter CK of P.E.O., Hestia, United Methodist Women, and Leisure Hour, as well as serving several terms on the USD 348 Baldwin City Board of Education. She was devoted to her family and extended family and with her sister, hosted "Sunday Night Dinner" for her family members for many years. She and her two sisters resided together for many years at the residence on 9th street in Baldwin City where they collectively raised Mary Jane's two sons and Charlene's three daughters.
