Mary Green Obituary

Mary Lucille Kelly was born in Chicago to John J. Kelly and Rosa (Freund) Kelly on July 19, 1928. The family moved to Colorado, and Mary was raised in the mountains she loved.

While at school at Colorado A & M in Ft. Collins, she met her "football player," Pat Green, and they were married in 1948. They moved to Pat's hometown and raised their family in Lawrence. Mary was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend, but her real passion was in being a wife, mother and grandmother to her 9 children, 27 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She never missed a recital, game, swim meet, school program, first Holy Communion or any of her kids' activities. She was often seen at 2 or 3 activities in a day or evening.

Mary loved life and was a wonderful friend and neighbor to many. She played bridge, bowled, played golf, sewed Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls for countless church bazaars, made Christmas ornaments for her grandchildren and hosted the "infamous" Sunday night suppers for the whole family and often many extra friends of the family.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for over 65 years, Daughters of Isabella, the Altar Society and a member of PEO.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Cross (Ted) and her children and grandchildren: Debby Crady (Hal, Jama, Bryce); Jadene Stewart (Randy, Erin, Katie); Mike Green (Kathy, Tiffaney, Lisa, Hal); Tim Green (Debbie, Molly, Daniel, Jake); Leslie Mumford (John, Jenna, Meghan, Lauren); Tracy Green (Nick, Patrick, Matt); Mark Green (Mary, Jessica, Katlyn, Morgan, Tanner); Marsi Bertrand (Madison, Mason, Cale); Doug Green (Sharon, Jesse, Kaysha, John, Karson) Also 15 great grandchildren

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Patrick D. Green and a daughter-in-law, Jan Green.

A Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Warren McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2018 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all the care givers at Bridge Haven for their loving care and Interim Hospice for their help and support with Mary.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her name to St. John the Evangelist Church, Alzheimer's Association, Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Guardian Angel Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

My wife Julie and I are saddened to read of Mary's passing. I would sit and visit with her while visiting my mother-in-law at Bridge Haven until her passing. I missed seeing Mary and seeing a 'perk' in her eyes when I would mention one of her kids name. May all Mary's family find peace in knowing she suffers no more. A very sweet soul is now watching over all of you.
