Martha Allen Obituary

Martha was born March 13, 1943 in Washington, C.C., the second daughter of Dr. Ethan P. and Mary Y. Allen. She died April 28, 2018 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at age 75. She attended the Lawrence Public Schools, graduating from Lawrence High School in 1961. While in high school she was co-editor of the L.H.S. Budget and delegate to Girls' State. After graduating she attended the University of Kansas graduating in 1965 with honors in political science. At the University of Kansas she was a member of Pi Beta Phi social sorority.

The following year she was a graduate student in journalism at Columbia University in N.Y.C. obtaining her masters degree in 1966.

She lived and worked in several mid-western communities before moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she was reporter for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune for 29 years before retiring.

After retiring she became a world traveler journeying to such far-away places as Yap, New Zealand and the tip of South Africa, as well as many trips to England and the rest of Europe.

Martha was an avid gardener and flower arranger, winning many awards for her stunning arrangements. She was also a faithful member of Lake Harriet Methodist Church during her years in Minneapolis. She belonged to several literary clubs as a result of her insatiable love of reading

She leaves behind her sister, Mary Elizabeth Allen of Lawrence, and many cousins-all of whom she loved dearly. She also leaves behind many loyal friends who enriched her life immeasurably.

A service for Martha will be held at 2:00 p.m., May 18, 2018 at Lake Harriet Methodist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Martha was always a bright spot and strong leader at LHS. I didn't move to Lawrence until my sophomore year, and I didn't know her well, but I knew she was a vibrant person with a lot of talent and abilities. She will be missed by all who knew her.
