From Jim Raymo...
I was Marian’ company commander while in Vietnam. I chose him to be my jeep driver because of his easy and likable disposition. In the military normally officers and enlisted men don’t become friends but that was not the case with Nook (his nickname for us as the Vietnamese word for water was Nook) and me. We did become friends and followed up with visits after we got out of the military, him coming up to Minnesota and me going down to Lawrence. I have 7 children, 3 biological and 4 adopted African American boys who called him, “Uncle Nook.”
He never talked about the success he had in sports and I never realized it until I went to his apartment once with my kids and saw all the incredible trophies including his MVP trophy’s, championship trophies etc. He was quite a guy.
