We are so sorry for your loss! Marion was such a wonderful man and musician and the very soul of the Lawrence City Band. We've known Marion since 1984 and have valued the friendship of he and Marcia since then. He was loved by his students and respected by his colleagues. You will be missed, Dr. Roberts.

We are sad to learn of Dr. Roberts passing. He was a VERY important person in our son's life and ours too.
Our son, Jason McWilliams graduated from BVN in 1994 and lettered in band all four years he was there. He never took music lessons beyond what he learned from Dr. Roberts, but had a knack of being able to play virtually any instrument within a few hours of picking it up.
Dr. Roberts was unique in so many ways. He not only made every band member feel special; instilling them with pride and a deep desire to excel, he also presented his band in a way that garnered respect from the entire student body. His formula worked so well that Jason looked forward to marching band practice even during the heat of the summer and loved traveling to competitions where the BVN marching band was always scored as "excellent."
Jason was in the hospital for his graduation night, but was announced anyway to a round of applause, and after the graduation, Dr. Roberts came to the hospital to present Jason his diploma. There was a very special bond between the two that I'll never forget.
Following his graduation, Jason was offered art scholarships from several of the most prestigious art institutes in the U.S. He attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) his freshman year and then moved to the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) to focus on painting his sophomore year. Tragically, he was killed in an auto accident mid-way through his first semester at KCAI. Dr. Roberts dedicated a concert to his memory.
Dr. Roberts made the world a better place and I'm sure was a positive influence on thousands of young people. His memory will live on in our hearts.

Marcia and family -
My heavy heart is with you as you mourn the loss of Marion. Seems strange to call him that as a student I called him Dr. Roberts. Thank you for loaning him to his students and allowing him so much time to bring the love of music, band and performing to many! I will never forget auditioning for him at Baker at age 18 - shaking like the cowardly lion on Wizard of Oz. He was so kind and encouraging and put me at ease. The band trip to England was a highlight of my life and will forever be one. He worked us hard and expected dedication. I will always remember his smile & my time at Baker in band. Many blessings to you all. Megan Michael
