Margaret West Obituary

Margaret Ellen West, 97, passed away January 16, 2018 at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born October 27, 1920 to A.E. and Anna (Green) Ketchum of Downing, Missouri. Months after completing her high school education she began teaching in a one-room school. She completed her college degree over 11 summers while teaching during the school year. She taught grade school and mid-level math in both Missouri and Kansas.

On November 8, 1942 she married Roy N. West of Lancaster, Mo. After Roy left teaching to enter the ministry, they served together at United Methodist churches in Axtell, Junction City, Altamont-Mound Valley, Topeka, Holton, and Kansas City, KS. In every place, she enjoyed her memberships in United Methodist Women and P.E.O. Margaret served as Kansas East Conference Children's Coordinator and enjoyed training Sunday School teachers for many years. After "retiring" to their farm near Lancaster, Margaret served as secretary to the District Superintendent in Kirksville. Roy and Margaret moved to Baldwin City, KS in 2000.



Margaret was preceded in death by husband Roy, her brother Max Ketchum, and her sister Dortha Jackson.

She is survived by son James (Jim) and wife Jeanne of Palo, Iowa, and daughter Martha and husband Nick Harris of Baldwin City. She will be missed by her five grandchildren and spouses – Christopher, Todd (Jennifer) and Ryan (Paula) West, Kristin (Brad) Peterson, and Brian (Ashley) Harris – and nine great-grandchildren – Andrew and James West; Kara, Nolan and Callista West, Olivia Fuller, Ali and Blake Peterson, and Owen Harris.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 22 at the First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City, KS. A funeral service will follow at 11:00, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery.
