Margaret Schwartzburg Obituary

A Celebration of Life Service for Margaret Ann Schwartzburg, 85, of Lawrence, Kansas, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 17, 2023, at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Lawrence. A reception will follow. Margaret Ann passed away on May 13, 2023 in Prairie Village, Kansas.

Margaret Ann was born on February 28, 1938, in Miami, Florida. She was the daughter of Col. Robert and Katherine (McLin) Pentland Jr. She retained her love of Florida and all things tropical throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her former husband, David Schwartzburg.

Margaret Ann's love for the ocean led her to study marine biology at the University of Florida and The University of Miami where she received a Bachelor's Degree in both marine biology and English.

Map, (as she was known by her friends) worked in the United States Senate, for Life Magazine, and traveled the world with her characteristic enthusiasm for adventure and new experiences. Her favorite spot, however, was Lawrence, Kansas, where she lived the last 50 years of her life. In Lawrence, Map volunteered for the food pantry, CASA, the PTA, and the Brownie Scouts where she was a troop leader. She was the co-owner of a lovely Lawrence home decorating business, Imagine That! Map was the best cheerleader at Dodge's football games, Kate's track and cross-country meets, and later at Maclin and Cameron's soccer, football, and basketball games. Family and friends were Map's greatest accomplishment. Margaret Ann will always be remembered for her love and friendship with her children and grandchildren, a home always decorated to perfection, and the most beautifully decorated table for any holiday or occasion. She was treasured for her generosity, kindness, thoughtfulness, and beautiful smile. She will be remembered always for her passionate love of color in her wardrobe and decor. She simply radiated joy and will be greatly missed.

Margaret Ann is survived by her children, Katherine and husband, Ward Strahan of Prairie Village, Kansas, Dodge and his wife, Melissa Schwartzburg of Ocala, Florida, and Laurie McClure of Stevensville, Michigan, and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in Margaret Ann's name to the Lawrence Humane Society or Just Food in Lawrence. Contributions may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044.

Map was one of the most beautiful ladies (inside and out) that I ever knew, and know many who would agree. She and my father, Charles grew up together for a time on Sunset 4, and she was a dear friend to my mother, Becky in later years. I remember many an occasion where Map was "part of the gang" - Mom and Dad, our grandparents (who also knew (and were neighbors as I only recently learned) her parents, Col and Mrs Pentland as well, Zil and her son John Towle, Tommy Otto, Margie Bettendorf, the Orrs, Setlins and Van Dynes... such wonderful memories. I still remember her white Mustang when she was living in the house on Sunset 2. Map was also Godmother to my sister Kelly and me, and I will always remember fondly Community Church on Miami Beach, which we still have a few wonderful old photos of with many of those mentioned here. I´m sorry for your loss and the world´s loss, but I know we will all meet again and with this group, heaven will be a nonstop celebration!

No one in our 34 years in Lawrence was so fully gracious, kind, compassionate, loving, and beloved than our long-time neighbor Mappie. She welcomed us into her family (her maternal grandmother was a Turnbull); she especially welcomed our son Jay, who had disabilities; she was as close to family as we have had with people not our family by blood or marriage; she helped raise our daughters, as we did likewise for Katie S., and she created a home that was constantly colorful and welcoming. -- Rud and Ann Turnbull

So very sad to see this in the Herald. Map was one of a kind. She was a cherished friend of my family's back in the '60s. She was kind, loving, generous, exuberant, an amazing hostess, a beautiful person in all ways!

Katie as you know your mother was The Best of what we all should be. I know she´ll make heaven a more beautiful place. I haven´t seen her for several years but I have thought of her a lot, her kindness and always had a beautiful smile. You and your family are in our prayers. I wish I had words to ease your pain. Just know you have some long lost friends that love you and here for you
