Margaret Backus Obituary

Margaret Murphy Backus

Margaret Murphy Backus, 49, Lawrence, died on Monday, April 7, 2014. Maggie was born on July 11, 1964, to William R. and Jill C. Murphy in St. Louis, Missouri.

Maggie died after a long and well-lived life. She loved being a wife, mother and friend. She graduated from high school and then ran away from home to explore the world. She ended up in Milwaukee, Wis., for two years where she made many friends, drank too much beer and studied for a bit at Marquette University. She returned to St Louis for two years, working and attending school while living with her parents. She moved to Lawrence in 1987 to attend KU and live with friends. Those were good years, and after finishing school (she'd had enough, really) she met Richie, in December 1989. They fell in love almost instantly – it really does happen!! They were married nine months later. They picked September 22, 1990, because the autumnal equinox is so beautiful, and 1990 was an easy year to remember.

Maggie and Richie enjoyed many years together. Their first date was to go sledding, and after that they were almost inseparable. They loved to roam the countryside, driving for hours looking at the beauty of the world around them. In 1994 and 1996, they welcomed Madeline and Charlie into their lives. The family moved to Boulder, Colo., in 1996 and loved the outdoors, searching for adventure in the mountains. In 1999, they moved back to Lawrence where Maggie worked for many years at Framewoods and the Lawrence Arts Center. Richie worked as a mechanic, parts guy, brewer and eventually as a magazine editor.

One cannot write about Maggie's life without including Richie, Maddie and Charlie – for whom she would fight battles, climb mountains, and make banana bread. Maggie was a really happy and optimistic person, and she would ask that you shed a few tears for her, but then get on with the business of living and find something decent with which to occupy yourselves. You may want to pass around the Irish whiskey once or twice. There isn't much more to say. People are born, live and die, and that is the nature of life. Maggie will do her best to put in a good word for all of you with the big guy.

Maggie is survived by Richie and their two children, Madeline and Charlie. She is also survived by her mother, Jill Murphy, and the Good Guys, her six siblings: Christine (Christopher) Kaemmerer, Kaki Murphy, TJ (Kathy) Murphy, John (Linda) Murphy, Mary Murphy, and Jim (Anne) Murphy. She is also survived by Frances (Paul) Clymer, Rob Backus, Ozzie (Retta) Backus and Tony Backus, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. There will be a memorial service at St. John the Evangelist Church, 1234 Kentucky St. at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12. There will be a hellacious dusk-to-dawn celebration of her life, to be announced at a later date.

Richie and Kiddo's ~Murphy/ Backus clan
How I love you and Maggie.
Hope this helps and gives you comfort.
Love is eternal.
Grief has no timeline.
Memories will not be forgotten.
Nor the face, voice or laugh.
Always and forever stamped on your heart
and mind.
This, I found to be true.
Spring will become my memory of Maggie and
you.
Her face and spirit in every bird and flower.
As spring Bloom's a new in glory and wonder
I will be thinking of you.
I did shed more than a tear or two.
As I thought of Mag's and y'all.
Lookin at the finch feeder she gave me last year
I was thrilled to see a finch eating at my huggin
tree. Oh what a blessings she be.
On my heart

April 10, 2014

maggie was quite a woman, as anybody who read her auto-obituary fully appreciates.

it was clear she belonged among the backus boys. i like to include myself among them- i hope not too much straying from the actual. the backus boy's father was my older brother's advisor for his senior thesis (he went on to be a russian historian). it was through this rawkus group i first met maggie. when she was diagnosed 15-16 years ago with an untreatable condition, the prognosis was for atmost 4 or 5 weeks. maggie thought the hell that, i'm going to see maddie and charley through high school. this was shortly after 1994 and1996.

during this time, i myself was diagnosed with an extremely rare untreatable condition (my first prognosis was that i likely would not make it to the elevator down the hall from the kumed examination room. maddie and i took up, when we saw each other, discussions of the variations of our organ recitals. in recent years these meetings became less frequent. we would unpredictably run into each other in the waiting room of lmh oncology.

no question. maddie was a courage giver. of the backus boy's kind.

Oh, Maggie...what a great life you have lived with you and your family and friends. You must be very proud and full of joy right now! I remember you in Lawrence in the mid '80s coming in from St. Louis and fitting in just like you had always been here. I remember one crazy road trip...to the Final Four in Dallas...where a bunch of us loaded into someone's parents' van and we headed to the Big D. We had so much fun!!!! Didn't win that year but had such a blast anyway that you'd had thought that we did! I'll always remember your wonderful free spirit and kindness. Please be a guiding light for all of us until we meet again...cheers!!!

I met you both at a dinner party at Barb Norris's home, perhaps 5 years ago. It was a lovely spring night and I remember meeting you 2 and enjoying the evening very much. Wow, I never new Maggie, I only clicked on this link because her picture reached out to me. I have never sent a condolence about someone I didn't even know. But I can only imagine how she would have touched me in real life based on what a still picture conveyed. To her children: treasure every moment and be committed to living your lives with the inexpressible joy and infectious fun your mother passed around freely. Have a free spirit and know that her spirit is with you always. Never lament what is gone, just count yourself lucky for what you had.

April 9, 2014

Our prayers have been and will continue to be with Maggie and her seemingly amazing family. I loved reading the words written about Maggie's life in the obit. I knew Maggie in high school and the description of her written today, epitomizes my memory of her during those teen years. She was so spontaneous and with a wicked sharp sense of humor. Maggie could always crack me up. Heck, she could get the entire class laughing hysterically, in the teacher's presence, and then she wouldn't even get in trouble for doing it!
Back then, she lived life to the fullest… and I'm not surprised to know she live that way her whole entire life!!
We should all be more like Maggie! I'm sure her energy is surrounding her loved ones right now, trying to lighten their grief, cheer them up and let them know she is actually doing GREAT!!!
Sending you all prayers of peace and love,

Always a shining light in my heart! "Maggie Murphy will be queen all the ships will be painted green, when Ireland gets her home rule" my Dad used to sing this to Maggie whenever we met--usually on the basketball court at Lourdes.
