Magdalene Carttar Obituary

Magdalene Stieghorst ("Maggie") Carttar died peacefully, surrounded by family, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on April 30, 2018, at the age of 95.

Maggie was born on February 13, 1923, in Hamburg, Germany, to Theodor L. and Johanna (Meyer) Stieghorst. She immigrated to the United States with her parents as an infant, and grew up in the city of Evanston, Illinois. She graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1941, and from Monmouth College (Ill.), in 1945. While earning her Master's Degree in Physiology (1948) at the University of Chicago, she worked for the Atomic Energy Commission in its early days. At the university, she met Donald M. Carttar, whom she married on October 29, 1949. In 1951, the couple moved to Lawrence, where Maggie taught physiology at the University of Kansas. Between 1952 and 1968, the couple welcomed six children into their family. They divorced in 1976.

Maggie was passionate about children, and about education. She was a first-generation parent and board member at the Lawrence Community Nursery School, which five of her six children attended and where three later served as parents themselves. She served at Head Start, ferrying children to and from school; and with the Cordley Elementary School PTA, which helped form her interest in education policy. After raising her children, she returned to KU to secure her Master of Education degree in 1970, then taught sixth grade at Sunset Hill Elementary School for seven years. She next served as the Placement Director for the KU School of Law, retiring in 1991. She also was elected to two terms on the School Board for USD 497 (1983-1991), where she served twice as President.

Among her interests, Maggie loved excursions, whether close to home or far afield, especially with her family. While they were young, she took her chidren on trips to watch the sun rise at Wells Overlook or Lone Star Lake. Years later, she journeyed with them and their own children throughout the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. Maggie also loved the Christmas season. Every year she baked more than 100 loaves of German stollen to share with people she loved and admired. For more than sixty years, she led her family and scores of friends on an annual caroling circuit throughout Lawrence, often by school bus, no matter the weather.

Maggie is survived by her six children, Stephen (Cindy), Paul (Mary Frances Ellis), Peter (Rosalea), Lene Brooke (Jim), Hans (Jennifer), and David (Claudia Olea), all of Lawrence; her seventeen grandchildren, Rebecca Lu (Dan), Katherine, Johanna, Elizabeth, Maggie Sánchez (José), Emma Brooke, Tennery, Patrick (Lia Palazzolo), Andrew, Sally, Quinlan, Maggie, Isabel, Katie, Amelia, Teddy, and Gabriela; her five great-grandchildren, Sean, Aaliyah, Adella, Mila, and Emiliano; and eight nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gunther ("Gunny") Stieghorst, her former husband Don, and a daughter-in-law, Sarah (Jones) Carttar.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, May 7, at 11:00 AM at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence, with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Maggie's life. Donations in her memory may be made to Lawrence Community Nursery School at 645 Alabama Street, or to Audio Reader at 1120 W 11th Street, Lawrence.

Every time, I mean every time, my family visited Maggie, she made me feel like I was the most important person on the planet I was a youngster, her second cousin, I think, but she looked me in the eye, heard what I had to say, and commented in the most appropriate way and Ill always remember this. She was the genuine article :) Peace be to her memory.

I was a student at Sunset hill. I was blessed to have your mother teach me. We had moved the year before and I did not adjust well to my new school. That was until I had your Mom. She kept me after school and allowed me to practice my math on the over head projector while she graded papers. I have never forgotten how gentle and kind she was to me. My God bless you while you grieve the loss of a very wonderful woman.

To Maggie's family: I have many memories as a child and young adult going to Lawrence to visit your mom/grandmother Maggie, early on with your dad and lots of activity in the house with all of you running around, and later with your grandmother, Tante Hannie and then to your mom as she lived on her own. It was always a fun trip and conversation was full of energy. Maggie talked to me as if I were an important part of the visit, no matter how old or young I was. I remember your dad playing the piano. I have fond memory or going with my mom, Guiomar, and sister, Roxanne, when Maggie pierced our ears (which made me think she was the coolest lady on the planet!) There was always a good meal or dessert involved. Maggie was a great lady, so fully engaged in life and always focused on her family as the most important part of her life. She was so proud of all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Loved getting her "family tree" Christmas greeting. My mom, Guiomar, had a special place in her heart for her cousin, Maggie. May god bless you as you go forward and may your many loving memories hold you close at this time. Love,
Susan and Roger, Abbey and Ethan Schmitt

TO all the Carttar clan: You were lucky to have your mom and grandma so active, involved and caring for so many years. I knew her when I was a child at Trinity Lutheran, and she was an active member there, and more recently talked with her and laughed with her at Presbyterian Manor. She was certainly famous for her stollen! Rejoice in a life well lived!

Carttar Family - I first met Maggie when my mother watched David and he got the chicken pox from my little sister. Maggie just laughed in her Maggie way! Our paths continued to cross through the years and she always asked about my family and my little sister in particular with a laugh. She did a lot for everyone and the community that will be remembered. Thank you Carttar's for sharing your mother all these years!

When we decided to move back to Lawrence with our two little tiny children in the 1990s, we knew that Maggie Carttar and other engaged and woke and smart women had started LCNS--all three of our kids went there, imbibed the spirit of Maggie Carttar and her fellow founders. Her children and grandchildren imbibe her and their spirit, so I'm not saying goodbye to that. I'll say this--I was leaving LMH just a few weeks ago, one of my family members in there not feeling so good, and I drove by the place at maine and 6th that rents or sells all sorts of medical amelioration devices. I am pretty sure I saw Maggie Carttar, so stalwart and lovely and carrying a small oxygen tank, and her son Peter (grand daughter Maggie's dad?) loading whatever we load into cars at these times. But what struck me so much was the ease with which this was happening--this careful loving interaction. And she was beautiful. And she has done so much for this community, and continues to do.

Maggie inspired everyone she met. Her enthusiasm and goodness were infectious. After meeting with her you just wanted to go out and do good things. She brought joy to our family since the 50's and will be deeply missed by all of us.

I was so sad to see "Maggie" had passed. She was such a character! I remember the first time I spoke with her on the phone and she was so excited about bringing her family to Brandon Woods to carol for our residents! And, then when you all showed up! She was such a delight to know and she was so proud of her family and friends. She will be greatly missed and I am so grateful for the time that I got to know her! My thoughts and prayers to all her family at this sad time.

Forever young, beautiful, indomitable; a fireball of love, dedication and compassion the likes of which will cross your path but once in a lifetime, if you're that lucky.
