Mable Durrant Obituary

Mable Layne Turner Durrant passed from this earth peacefully on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 surrounded by a loving and caring family at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community. Mable was born on May 28, 1924 in Reader, Arkansas.

Mable was her high school valedictorian and homecoming queen in 1942. She supported World War II by working at the Jacksonville Ammunition plant in Little Rock, AR then at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Tulsa, OK. In 1944, Mable went to work as a telegrapher for the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming and Utah. She met Vern Durrant there, and they married in Elko, NV on May 31, 1947. They lived in Echo, UT; Wasatch, UT; Hermiston, OR; Lawrence, KS; Rawlins, WY; and Portland, OR before finally settling in Lawrence, KS in 1959. In Lawrence, Mable worked for Hallmark Cards, Hercules Sunflower Ammunition Plant and as an LPN at KU Watkins Hospital. She relished the many relationships she developed with her co-workers over the years.

Mable was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a bridge player; she developed many wonderful friendships through these activities. When her grandchildren and great grandchildren came along, she made quilts for each of them and had a special place in her heart for each one of them.

Mable was preceded in passing by her parents Walter and Emily Turner, her husband Vern (Bud) Durrant and sisters Margaret, Juanita, and Wanda (her twin). She is survived by her four children, Sherrie Binggeli (Charlie), Jerry Durrant (Cheryl), Ricky Durrant (Carolyn) and Kevin Durrant (Lori) and her eight grandchildren, Stacey Unrein, Jennifer Maier, Jeremy Durrant, Alison Greiner, Trevor Durrant, Emily Durrant, Leia Durrant, Jarrett Durrant and eleven great grandchildren.

My deepest condolences to my classmate, Jerry Durrant, and his family, on the loss of his mother Mable. May the Lord Jesus Christ comfort all who mourn her passing. Losing one's mom is so difficult. I hope that Visiting Nurses Hospice receives many donations in Mable's name.
