Lennie Baker Obituary

Lennie Baker, lead vocalist on Sha Na Na’s hit, “Blue Moon,” died after a brief hospitalization on February 24, 2016, according to The Associated Press. He was 69.

Baker played saxophone and sang for the New York City doo-wop group Sha Na Na from 1970 to 1999. He was the lead vocalist on their version of “Blue Moon,” which was featured in the 1978 movie “Grease.”

He was a member of the group during their heyday as hosts of the “Sha Na Na” syndicated variety TV show. Their colorful costumes, comical and high-energy renditions of classic 1950s rock ‘n’ roll were at the forefront of a wave of 1950s nostalgia that swept the 1970s. The highly rated show ran from 1977 to 1981.

Baker continued to appear and tour with the group until his retirement in 2000, when he moved to Martha’s Vineyard.

I miss being able to visit Lennie anytime also being able to pock up the phone and call. We used to talk for hours about everything and nothing. Also if I were having a bad day , just by being with him and/ or hearing the sound of his voice all my troubles disappeared. I know I'll see him in God's house again one day. My love, thoughts and prayers to the Baker family always

I was just thinking of you today, our time together in the Wantells, the time Kenny Dean and I broke your piggy bank and you were so pissed off, you driving my MGA to work at Craigville Beach and it looked like you were wearing it. You beat me to where we're all going but I'd like to fire up an organ when we meet again and do a little jammin'. Ted Morss

It was sad to hear the news about Lenny passing. I hadn't seen him since we jammed a bit back in '66 or so when he was a regular at the "Surf Nantaskett" in the group "The Pilgrims". He was already famous to me because I had seen him in my first ever live band experience a few years earlier at the Hunt School dance in Weymouth, featuring the group "Big Lenny & the Wantells". He went on to do great things. God Bless, Brian A., Weymouth, MA

Lenny: We had many fine years together. As the Class of 1963 at Whitman Hanson was so good. After that it was a thrill to go see you perform.

You had a big heart and made people feel good. I asked you once if you remembered me. You said of course!! You are one of the Power girls and you lived on Stetson Street. It made me feel so good.

Now you are up in heaven. I know you will even be giving; even up there. Please watch out for you classmates. You will get through to us somehow. I love you/Carleen Power Fuller.

When Lennie turned 18, some friends and I threw him a birthday party at the Weymouth Motel (Middle St? just up from the HO JO's). Avid dancers, our group followed Paul Wayne & The Wantells and Lenny Baker & The Pilgrims. Always got a Christmas card from him. I saw Sha-Na-Na perform in Disneyland and Laughlin, NV. He was much too young to leave us. The music will always live on.
