LaVerna Louise Heffner

LaVerna Louise Heffner, age 93, of Overbrook, Kansas died August 15, 2012. She was born September 16, 1918, in Baldwin City, Kansas, the daughter of Ray and Violet Price.

She attended Baldwin High School. LaVerna was a lifelong homemaker and very active in helping with the family farm around the Worden area all her life.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #309 of Lawrence; she also enjoyed playing bingo at the VFW in Ottawa, Kansas.

On September 26, 1936 LaVerna was united in marriage to Arlie A. Heffner in Oskaloosa, Kansas. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, Murlin Heffner and his wife Neota of Lawrence, Kansas; Leonard Heffner and his wife Roxann of Baldwin City, Kansas; three granddaughters, Cheryl Kellison and her husband, Brian, of Lawrence; Stephanie Rodman and her husband, Todd, of Lawrence; Angela Portlock and husband, Jeremy, of Baldwin City; one grandson, Jason Heffner and Wife Cassy of Olathe, Kansas; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; four sisters, Adean Pease, Cleo Groff, Lucille Kerns, Maxine Price; and one brother, Emory Price.

Mrs. Heffner will be cremated. No services are currently planned. A private family burial at Worden Cemetery will be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, be made to Worden Methodist Church, Douglas County Hospice, or Midland Care of Topeka c/o Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home, 730 Western Heights Drive, Overbrook, Kansas 66524. Murlin & Leonard, my prayers are with you and your families. Your mom was a special person in every way; she always had time to take us kids skiing at Lone Star Lake, work for the youth at the Overbrook Fair, and supported the Overbrook sports programs.

Leonard,Roxie,Angie & Jeremy, we have been thinking of you guys. I think Laverna was proud of you all and how you carried the legacy of the farm to another generation. John got a lot of humor in Laverna! She was an original person and I'm sure those close to her will miss her.
