Larry Williams Obituary

Larry Williams died Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas. He resided in Lawrence with his sister Sharon Williams. Larry was born with Down's Syndrome and led a remarkable life. He will be greatly missed and dearly remembered.

Larry Williams was born February 3, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Bennie and Hellen Williams. He was the third of six children. Larry's father was

determined that his son would be as self-sufficient as possible and nurtured him tirelessly and patiently. Upon the death of his parents, his sister Sharon continued his care.

While living in Lawrence, Larry enjoyed working at Cottonwood Incorporated, which he referred to as "school." He enjoyed his work, loved his friends there and entertained them with his dancing and finger popping. He loved music. His favorite artists were Johnny Taylor and Al Green.

At home Larry was always seen with a deck of playing cards. His dry sense of humor and infectious smile were charming, as was his determination to be a snappy dresser. He kept his room neat and clean and enjoyed spending time there watching TV with his faithful dog George. For action, Larry was always excited by go-cart racing. Some of his favorite moments were going shopping and out to dinner with Sharon and spending time with his brother Marlon.

Prior to the pandemic, Larry enjoyed going to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses where he was warmly embraced by all. He frequently expressed the desire to see his mom and dad again. What a joy it will be when that wish is granted through the resurrection. Until then, we take comfort knowing that, although filled with challenges, Larry's was a life well-lived.

Larry is survived by his 5 siblings: Jan Williams, Bennie Williams Jr. (Stephanie), Tyrone Williams, Sharon Williams, Marlon Williams (Shari). His nieces and nephews include Bruce Williams, Orlando Williams, Joseph Williams, Tiffany Williams, Dominique Williams, Sharnita Dickson, April Williams, Jessica Williams, Amy Williams and Elizabeth Williams. He leaves 4 great nephews and 6 great nieces.

On Sunday February 6th, a memorial will be held at 4:00 PM on Zoom.

Larry rode my bus to Cottonwood and I always looked forward to seeing that smile.
His Earthly presents will be missed by so many. He was a true joy to be around.

As a driver for the City of Lawrence Para Transit service, I had the privilege of having Larry as a passenger on my Para Transit bus for many years. Initially, it was from the Scotchman Square neighborhood on 25th Street; and, most recently, from Wetland on Westland Place. I would always prepare him for "limo service" either to or from Cottonwood! Always a pleasant experience!
Thank you, Sharon, for your greeting and smile whenever I had the opportunity to share the arrival or departure moment with you and Larry! God Bless...
