Larry Kay Obituary

Larry Duane Kay, 76, of Baldwin City, Kansas, passed away on August 23, 2023, after a brief illness. Larry was born in Moline, Illinois on Oct 5, 1946, to Duane Kay and Geneice (Haydon) Kay. He moved from Rock Island, Illinois to the Kansas City area and then to Baldwin City in 1961 where he attended Baldwin High School and was a part of the Baldwin community for most of his life. He also lived in Lawrence, KS and Edmond, OK but always called Baldwin home.

Larry was a man of many interests and was an enthusiast of vehicles, fishing & outdoors, and mechanics. He was a purveyor of cars, motorcycles, campers, and boats and was often seen driving unique cars and motorcycles and always with a story to tell of his adventures. One of the most recognizable vehicles was his distinctive blue Corvette with a personalized license plate with his initials, LDK.

In addition to his interests, Larry was a lifelong learner. He mastered many trades, studied numerous subjects, and obtained many credits and several professional certifications from higher institutions. Larry had many skills and chose professions in public safety and social services. When asked why, he simply stated, "I just want to help." Some of the jobs he used his expertise include: police officer at the Lawrence Police Department, peer counselor at Bert Nash, mechanical equipment calibration technician, and a tradesman who taught mechanics, welding and shop classes at several local schools and community colleges. All of these unique roles reflected his passion for serving others and being a part of the community.

Larry was a friend and a mentor to many, a friendly face and smile with a laugh and an unforgettable sense of humor to match. He was passionate about sharing with and helping others. That is how we will remember him.

Larry is survived by daughters: Kelly Turner, and Lori Howard (Kent Miller); grandchildren: Tanner and Justin Howard; Jacob, Carson and Travis Turner; great granddaughter: Kingsley Turner; brother Steve (Bonnie) Kay; niece Kristi Kay Miller and nephew Brian Kay; and many friends along the way. He was preceded in death by parents Duane and Geneice Kay.

Private services will be held at a later date.
