Kenneth Amess Obituary

Kenneth Leroy Amess, 87, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away June 16, 2012, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A visitation will be at Strode Funeral Home, Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Thursday, June 21st from 6 – 7:30 p.m. He will be laid to rest in the Abilene, Kansas Cemetery, on Monday, June 25th at 1:00 p.m. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth was born December 8, 1924, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Irene Lancaster and T. R. Amess. He graduated from Abilene, Kansas High School and enlisted in the U. S. Army. He later joined the United States Air Force and remained in the military until he retired on June 30, 1965, as a Technical Sergeant. Kenneth married Colleen Lois Clark on March 22, 1947. They traveled to Greenland, England and numerous places in the United States, while he was in the Air Force.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, Ken and Colleen made their home in Lawrence, Kansas. He worked for a short time at Kansas University and then decided to become a barber. He opened a barber shop with his partner Roger Evers and worked there until he retired. He loved playing golf, working on their home and woodworking projects. In January 2011, they moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to be close to their niece and her husband, Jim and Carol Wicksted.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Colleen, and survived by his nieces, great nieces, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, and many dear friends. In remembrance of Kenneth, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Oklahoma and Arkansas Chapter, 6465 S. Yale Ave., #312, Tulsa, OK 74136, or the American Heart Association, Oklahoma Affiliate, P.O. Box 841125, Dallas, TX 75284-1125.

I loved Ken. He was my barber from the time I was 10 years to old to when I moved away from Lawrence after college. He told great stories and treated me very well. My condolences to all of you.
