September 5, 2012

Our deepest sympathy to Vicki, Julia, Martin, and Peter on your loss of your husband and father.
I had the great fortune to meet John in 1978 when my wife, Debbie, and I arrived in Wiesbaden, Germany. John was a valued colleague and friend, unique among a large, close knit group of bright and dedicated people working for the Europe Property Disposal HQ. John and his family were warm and gracious members of a community that enjoyed our work, living in a beautiful city, and discovering the history and beauty of Europe. What a time it was. John and I later crossed paths in Kaiserslautern in the mid-90s and enjoyed catching up on friends and events. John and I reconnected in 2009 and enjoyed lively discussion about the state of our Union and the world. Both being progressives, we shared a lot of common ground. He did talk about his heart attack, surgery, and recovery but in our most recent correspondence a couple months ago he never mentioned his failing health. Unlike many “geezers” (John's words, not mine) he did not let his health define who he was. John was a remarkable person, his intellect and broad knowledge made him a true renaissance man. His mental acuteness never failed him. John also had a great sense of humor and great passion for those things he cared about. I will truly miss our conversations but have a lot of fond memories to keep his spirit alive.
