John Hoffmann Obituary

John Frederick Hoffmann, 67, died at Providence Living Center, Topeka, KS on December 13, 2023.

Starting in late adolescence, John's life was dictated by debilitating schizophrenia. John's conservator put it beautifully when he said of John, "I never cease to wonder why certain persons suffer with a life long illness like John's and how rare their bravery is to endure despite the illness. This is John's unique accomplishment in life and I stand in awe of it."

Born on February 23, 1956 in Missoula, Montana, he was the second of four children born to Robert and Sally Hoffmann. Raised in Missoula and Lawrence, KS, he graduated from Lawrence High School in 1974.

John was an inquisitive child who loved to learn. At a young age he would throw himself into subjects which interested him. He once did extensive research into Stonehenge, learning its history and making diagrams of the site. Young John was a budding cartoonist inspired by Mad and CARtoons magazines of the 1960s. In his teens, John traveled with his family throughout the West and as far as the Arctic Circle in Siberia.

John was preceded in death by his father Robert and mother Sally. He is survived by brothers Karl (Judy Browder) and David (Debra Wolfe) and by his sister Brenna (Frank) Olivier and her children Aiden and Jessie Olivier.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at Providence Living Center in Topeka.

John was a good friend in high school band who I lost track of after graduation. I remember him being a very nice young man.
