John Haase Obituary

John Robert Haase, lovingly known as "Moose," passed away at the age of 78 on January 3, 2025, in Lawrence, Kansas. Strong in both stature and mind, he was a man whose presence brought abundant kindness, boundless humor, and remarkable wisdom to all who knew him.

John's creativity and dedication were legendary-especially when it came to science projects. If you asked for his help, you could count on him taking the reins and working tirelessly until his vision was complete. And, with a twinkle in his eye, he would remind you of his hard work for years to come.

He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Lyn Chance. He was a devoted father to Devon (Tony) Kim and Wyatt (Ann) Haase, and a cherished "Grandpapa" to Jonah Kim, Josie Kim, and Sawyer Haase.

John lived a life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Those who knew him can only imagine he is now taking a long walk with his dog, Corky-rescuing more animals, stirring up some "good trouble," and reminding us all to drive safely.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

It is sad to hear of my old friend Moose. Condolences to his family. We had a lot of laughs over the years. Here are some pictures of our 45th and 50th high school class (1964) reunion. They make me smile remembering the Moose!

I want to reiterate how John took the lead in protecting our community and how his actions questioning the wisdom of building in the Wakarusa floodplain is a courageous example of how he made a difference and has won him the respect and admiration of so many in our community!

So very sorry to hear of John´s passing. I know that he loved his family very much & would talk about all of you when we visited. He & I have been close friends for many years. Many of my pleasant high school memories include John. He was indeed one of the smartest people I´ve ever known & wasn´t shy about sharing his knowledge. I always learned a lot from his wisdom He was a curious, creative independent thinker & liked to bring that out in others. I have so many fond memories of him & will always cherish the fríendship that we shared.

Fondly,
Marsha (Kresge) Mamdani

Dear Devon and Wyatt, So sorry to learn of the passing of your father. I remember John when he was on the Planning Commission years ago. I was working for neighborhood interests at that time that were often impacted by planning decisions. I always appreciated your father's wise counsel, and his ability to understand important citywide planning issues. I respected his intellect, and his interest in listening to public concerns and suggestions. His focus and decision making was always dependent upon what was best for our City. Best wishes to you and yours during this difficult time. Candy Davis
