John is fondly remembered as a resident of our rival, Pearson Scholarship Hall, at KU, but most especially as a fellow student at Univesität Tübingen in 1956-7. My favorite memories are when we were almost arrested for possession of a pistol because neither of us knew the German word for firecracker and subsequently scolded by a Schupo for 'disturbing the peace' with John's booming laughter in the dark streets.
