I'll never forget the kindness and encouragement you alwas showed me when I was just starting my musical journey in KC. Thanks for that first gig and always going the extra mile.

Thanks for your friendship and inspiration, John. Words can't begin to convey the ways you touched my life. My heart aches with your absence. I'm so sorry to hear about John. I met him through the Wakarusa Festival & was impressed with how kind, friendly & accepting he was. He loved music & loved the people that shared his passion. He touched many lives, because he was a very special guy. Hugs to David & the rest of the family.

This makes my soul sad, you were taken away too soon! My heart weeps for the family! I'm thankful to have known you and sad I did not have a chance to say good bye! John's efforts & passion for music helped instill more joy in more people than perhaps anyone else many of us have ever met. Whether it was tooling around Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri in beautifully done-up VW bus to spread the word about early Wakarusas, holding down a rickety shade tent that failed to cover the festival's Box Office as a storm barreled in at Clinton Lake, putting together an entire music festival for several years in southern Illinois, or just putting his hand on your shoulder as he paused to recognize & express his appreciation for the moment - John helped nurture the music scene wherever he went, and he made others better for it. Our organization would not be what it is today were it not for his efforts over the years - we will always remember you fondly, John, and we will miss you dearly. To Dave and the rest of the Barrett family, we wish you our best; you are in our thoughts and prayers.

It's safe to say that some friends faded out over time, by distance or lack of interest. You were not one of them. Though we didn't communicate as often, due to life taking over, you, unlike many others, held a special place in my heart, brother. You will me missed so, so much. Love you, man. See you again...

John was a great guy and, if there is to be any consolation, it can be found in the wonderful memories of him we are all blessed to have shared. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember both John and David as babies and followed them a little throughout the years. There are no words to say that will take away your pain - this young, vibrant person left this world too soon. May peace and love be with all of you.

My heart goes out to your family members, and my thoughts and prayers are of you, and with your family, your brothers, and the thousands of people whose lives' you touched, inspired, and forever changed, simply by virtue of being your wonderful self. The whole world is not the same without you, John. I know I personally never will be the same again.

You taught me more than I can put in to words. You showed me how to embrace life, and view it from the bright side. You once spoke these words to me, "Life is such a precious gift, [Dave]; it is SUCH a precious gift." You were a precious gift, John. YOU were such a precious gift, and I am so blessed and honored for the privilege of having been your friend.

You will forever be remembered, because you are way, way too unforgettable. Your indomitable spirit, kind-hearted soul, and authentic, genuine compassion for your fellow human beings, and for the music which ties us all together, will shine on for us, like a beacon, through the darkness, forever.

Good bye my friend John, you will be greatly missed and I pray for your family during this time of such great loss! I first met John when he was a teenager and was growing up with my children, he was always kind and respectful and had a big smile on his face. Even though I did not get to know him as he grew into a wonderful adult I always felt that he touched my heart and prayed his life was good to him. May God hold you in his arms and keep you close till you meet with your loved ones and many friends!

You will be forever missed by all who had the amazing chance to meet you.
