John Barrett Obituary

John Patrick Barrett

John Patrick Barrett, 31, loving brother, kind and caring son, and loyal friend to hundreds, unexpectedly passed from this world on the afternoon of Sunday, August 25, 2013.

John was born on January 9, 1982, just one minute after his identical twin brother, David. Affectionately known as "JB" to many who knew him, John's quick wit, sharp intellect, and kind spirit made him one of the most well-liked and popular individuals around. His charisma and charm were undeniable, and his generosity was truly boundless.

Even from a young age, it became apparent that John, along with David, would become a force that would touch thousands of lives. Traveling across the country with David and other friends was one of his greatest joys in life. He and his brother attended hundreds of concerts together throughout the years. In fact, this passion for music is what led John and his twin brother to careers in the music industry under the guise of "Team B." John was also an avid collector of poster rock art, and his collection of rare pieces of art work number in the hundreds.

John was also a loyal Kansas Jayhawks and St. Louis Cardinals fan. During his lifetime he was able to witness both teams win championships, which is more than any Cubs fan could ever say. John graduated from the University of Kansas in 2007 with a degree in political science, and spent two years studying the Arabic language. He was kind, compassionate, loving, witty, intelligent, and absolutely wonderful. The loss of such a beautiful individual is profoundly tragic, and our family will miss him with every fiber of our being for the rest of our lives.

John has a wonderful blended family, and is survived by his mother, Patricia Ann Hunt, 58, and father, Stephen Ross Barrett, 55, his step-mother Lori Kay Barrett, 52, his step-father Mark V Hunt, 56, his maternal grandmother, Mary Lou Hughes, 78, and paternal grandmother Maxine Serati, 87, his identical twin brother, David Ross Barrett, 31, younger brother, Daniel Stephen Barrett, 28, younger step-brother, Eugene Howard "Trey" Wheeler III, 28, and younger sister, Kelsey Brianna Barrett, 19. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, future brother-and-sister-in laws, and enough friends to fill a large book.

Memorial services will be held at 1pm on Friday, August 30, 2013 at Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Visitation will be from 11am until the time of service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Tunes for Tots or the Arbor Day Foundation.

The pain, the grief, and the feelings of helplessness can seem unbearable. At such times, we need to go to God's Word for comfort. John 11:39-44

John's efforts & passion for music helped instill more joy in more people than perhaps anyone else many of us have ever met. Whether it was tooling around Eastern Kansas and Western Missouri in beautifully done-up VW bus to spread the word about early Wakarusas, holding down a rickety shade tent that failed to cover the festival's Box Office as a storm barreled in at Clinton Lake, putting together an entire music festival for several years in southern Illinois, or just putting his hand on your shoulder as he paused to recognize & express his appreciation for the moment - John helped nurture the music scene wherever he went, and he made others better for it. Our organization would not be what it is today were it not for his efforts over the years - we will always remember you fondly, John, and we will miss you dearly. To Dave and the rest of the Barrett family, we wish you our best; you are in our thoughts and prayers.

It's safe to say that some friends faded out over time, by distance or lack of interest. You were not one of them. Though we didn't communicate as often, due to life taking over, you, unlike many others, held a special place in my heart, brother. You will me missed so, so much. Love you, man. See you again...

Stephen, Lori, Maxine and Rae:

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember both John and David as babies and followed them a little throughout the years. There are no words to say that will take away your pain - this young, vibrant person left this world too soon. May peace and love be with all of you.

My heart goes out to your family members, and my thoughts and prayers are of you, and with your family, your brothers, and the thousands of people whose lives' you touched, inspired, and forever changed, simply by virtue of being your wonderful self. The whole world is not the same without you, John. I know I personally never will be the same again.

You taught me more than I can put in to words. You showed me how to embrace life, and view it from the bright side. You once spoke these words to me, "Life is such a precious gift, [Dave]; it is SUCH a precious gift." You were a precious gift, John. YOU were such a precious gift, and I am so blessed and honored for the privilege of having been your friend.

You will forever be remembered, because you are way, way too unforgettable. Your indomitable spirit, kind-hearted soul, and authentic, genuine compassion for your fellow human beings, and for the music which ties us all together, will shine on for us, like a beacon, through the darkness, forever.

I love you, bro. You will be dearly missed.

Good bye my friend John, you will be greatly missed and I pray for your family during this time of such great loss! I first met John when he was a teenager and was growing up with my children, he was always kind and respectful and had a big smile on his face. Even though I did not get to know him as he grew into a wonderful adult I always felt that he touched my heart and prayed his life was good to him. May God hold you in his arms and keep you close till you meet with your loved ones and many friends!
