John Albers Obituary

On Monday September 12th, John David Albers passed away. John was 74 years old. He was born to Sara and John Albers (both deceased), on November 11, 1947, in Lawrence Kansas.

John lived in Lawrence all his life. He attended Lawrence High School where he graduated in 1966. Soon after, John joined the United States Navy where he served in Vietnam for a year. He was transferred to Camp Pendleton where he finished a 4-year stint and was honorably discharged only to come home and work for Our Own Hardware warehouse located in Ottawa KS. He worked at Our Own till the mid 90's. In the early 90's John was diagnosed with diabetes which became a debilitating disease. He shortly went on disability due to the Agent Orange verdict handed down by the VA. Many vets who were in the Vietnam conflict were afflicted with various diagnoses because of Agent Orange. Agent Orange was deemed the cause of John's diabetes.

John was preceded in death of his older sister Carol Stotts (Ponca City, OK) and his younger brother Robert Albers (Lawrence). John is survived by brothers Tom and Michael of Lawrence.

John was an avid exotic bird enthusiast. He owned and bred as many as 13 exotic birds. He was a member of several different exotic bird associations.

John was a Jayhawk and Chiefs fan following through the highs and lows.

John will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He has left an indelible mark on our lives.

Graveside services will be held privately.

Dear Tom and Mike,

My brother, Joe, informed me of your brother John's passing. Although I have not seen John for many years, we both had a connection since we both shared the same birthday, November 11, 1947. Our parents were good friends and both John Sr. and my father, Larry Flannery, Sr., were co-chairs of the building committee for St. John's school. Johnny and I were in cub scouts together, and I'm pretty sure my mother Dorothy and your mother Sarah were the den mothers. Your brother, Bobby, was in my brother Joes class as well. Please accept my sympathies for your loss. I will offer a Mass for Johnny in the near future. God's peace to you and your families! Fr. Bob Flannery

I was very saddened when I heard of John's passing. Over the past ten years or so I often had lunch with John every Friday at the Free State Brewery. It was always great to see him when we would converse about many things including our mutual love/ownership of birds. He was always extremely peaceful, gentle, and kind. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear of John's passing and his struggles due to agent orange exposure. He was a good friend in High School and we enjoyed running around the track field together. He had a great positive personality.
