Jay Madl Obituary

Jay Arthur Madl, age 77, was born on June 12, 1944 in Lawrence, Kansas to Arthur and Janice Madl, who preceded him in death. Jay grew up on a farm in Baldwin, the same place he called home for his entire life. Jay passed away peacefully at home on April 21, 2022, surrounded by family.

After Jay graduated from Baldwin High School in 1963, he continued working on the family farm. Jay met his wife, Karen Cox, in September, 1966. They married on February 18, 1967 and had three daughters. Jay continued the dairy farm business until the early 2000's when he then focused solely on buying, breaking and selling horses and raising beef cattle. Jay lived his life being his own boss.

Jay loved quarter horses. He started in his teens showing western pleasure. He enjoyed the hobby of cutting horses for a while, but was known by many for buying and selling horses. Jay sold his last horse on March 20, 2022 at a local sale, where he gleamed with joy with the outcome. Jay made many friends through his hobby of horses. He was trusted by the horse community to have well broke and sound horses. Jay received his 40-year belt buckle from Eminence, Missouri where he and Karen could be found in June & October for the weeklong trail ride.

Jay was lucky to have his brother Ted, living within a mile of him his entire life. They shared a strong bond, speaking daily over the last few years.

Jay could be found in the evenings square dancing with his wife Karen, at sporting events watching his children and grandchildren or watching western's at home.

Jay was proceeded in death by his parents, Art and Janice Madl and one grandson Trevor Leeker. He is survived by his wife, Karen, his brother Ted Madl (Peach), his three children Cindy Garrett (Matt), Michelle Leeker (Bill), Tiffany Whitney (Matt), and seven grandchildren, Cameron Phillips & Drew Garrett, Zachery (Braxton) & Hope Leeker; Ashlyn, Ryan and Jake Whitney. Jay also has several nieces and nephews and their families, many whom lived within miles of him and kept in frequent contact.

Funeral services will be held at Dunn's Landing, 4553 Ohio Rd., Wellsville, KS on Wednesday, April 26, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. The family will meet with friends for a visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at Lamb-Roberts-Price Funeral Home, Baldwin City, KS.
