Janet Nickerson Obituary

There are no formal services for Janet Marie Nickerson, 84, Lawrence, KS. Janet passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, May 16, 2022, at LMH Health. Janet was born on January 17, 1938, in Providence, RI, the daughter of Courtland and Florence (Hewitt) Kent.

Survivors include her children, Jeffrey W. Nickerson, Karen (John) Henley, Danna (William Alvarez) Nickerson, six grandchildren, Jacob Henley, Nicholas Alvarez, Ryan Henley, Kaitlyn Alvarez, Jenna Henley, and Dylan Alvarez. As well as many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, infant son David, and her seven siblings, George, Robert, Courtland (Bud), Gerald, and Richard, Marjorie, and Charlotte.

Janet and Dana were married on June 9, 1956. They spent their early years together in Rhode Island and New Jersey before moving to Kansas City around 1967. Janet spent the next 11 years raising her three children. She loved her many roles including Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, PTA president and school secretary. She was an awesome cook and was famous in many circles for her amazing brisket and deviled eggs. The family moved to Coral Springs, Florida in 1977 where she continued to raise her children. While she never attended college, she was extremely smart and took this new time in her life to focus on new careers including getting her Real Estate License.

After the passing of her husband Dana in 1986 she remained in Florida a few more years before moving back to Kansas City in 1990 to be closer to family. She worked at Valley View Bank in Overland Park for many years in the Mortgage Department before retiring. She spent many happy years with her friend and companion Kenneth Bennett before his death in 2012.

She then moved to Lawrence, Ks. She loved her role as mother throughout her life, but it was in 1993 when she became a nana and a grandmother twice within a month that she found the purest of joy. She had a deep and unique connection with each of her six grandchildren and was so very proud of all of their accomplishments, never missing the many milestones throughout their young lives. They each will be able to take her memory and her love with them throughout their lives and will always be assured that they were loved and adored by the most amazing woman they could ever have the good fortune of sharing their lives with. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. We would like to take this time to thank the wonderful group of nurses on 3West and doctors at LMH that took care of her as well as the amazing group of nurses from Visiting Nurses Association who brought us such peace during her final days.
